I'm not sure that this is really an area issue - i.e. Panhandle being separate from the rest of the state of Florida and or combined with the Dixie Divers.

I do think that because the Panhandle area has fewer members, those that dive together dive together more frequently. Thus the posts have as much to do with the people as they do with diving.

The last time I checked a post similar to the ones moved in the Florida forum remains in the Dixie Diver forum. As a Panhandler I will take the childish view that the South Floridians who are the moderators are picking on the the Panhandlers. :D :(

Organization is a very tricky thing to do. There is usually no one right way to organize things. (humor alert - Sorry DIR people.:blinking: ) What makes sense to one person may not to another. I do not know the technical side of message boards like this so I don't know if there is a better way to organize.

My suggestion is to post the inside joke threads under the Panhandle part (or which ever specific area forum is applicable). We know each other and those who wander into our little part of the world will just have to be prepared for us backwater in bred Panhandlers (and Panhandler wannabes.)

As for the moving of threads, I haven't come across that many moved threads. This latest round is probably the largest number I've ever seen at one time and is a little unsettling. The diplomat in me thinks that the poster, the mod and the complainer should try to work toward a solution that works for all. Of course that takes time and the volunteer mods don't have time to referee. So I don't know what the solution should be other than to title posts in such a way to avoid dead bodies floating in the sea or found on the beaches or swept up in waterspouts etc.

On a side note - one of the things that I've noticed about SB is an undercurrent of unless you are a tech diver or think you are the ultimate diver of the universe, you really don't belong on SB. I don't remember how I found this board, but I think I was looking for a resource on diving. For me it's not much of a resource - after the time I've spent here, I'm afraid to ask questions in the event that has already been asked before. I'm afraid to state any kind of opinion. I'm afraid to say that I just want to be a recreational diver who has fun - I don't like science so I don't really need to understand all the science and physiology about diving - this does not make me any less of a diver or not safe. SB has given me new friends for which I am very very greatful and I will continue to participate because of the friends. But I think some people need to check their attitudes at the door.

I'm sure this post will open me up to a lot of flaming. I hope not but it was kind of nice to get some things off my chest and express an opinion for a change.

lamont:
"what are they putting in the drinking water down in florida?"

Well that's easy: DIR divers are in our drinking water. :D

I think some humor should be allowed to stay in their region. I.E. would you make a quarry diving joke in Florida? Sometimes it just has to stay region specific.

kchFLA,

Well said.

Now that we've got our resident attorney for the panhandle on line, I saw we commision you to draw up paperwork for the Panhandle to "succeed" from the State of Florida!!!!! (or at least in on Scubaboard.)

If we had a FL panhandle forum, we wouldn't be having this problem with the MODS.

kchFLA, so whatcha doing Sunday? I'm goin to Morrison and we haven't had the chance to dive together! :)

As it relates to the topic at hand, neither the butt of the joke(s), nor the originator of the joke(s), seemed to take any offense at all. In fact, it seemed like good natured ribbing between friends, because that is EXACTLY what it was.

I guess no one here is a fan of Mind of Mencia or Dave Chappelle. LOL!

Humor alert - Mike_S - I hope you recognized yourself as a panhandler wannabe.

First, apologize in advance for the long post.
Second, I haven't read the posts in question.
I must vote against moving TOS compliant posts without at least notifying posters (and possibly unless the mod can show specifically what the violation is).
Misunderstandings are inevitable, and unless a user is mature enough to disregard an opinion or post, turn on the ignore button, or at least be tolerant, then they need to grow up. Let the other users decide what they want and don't want to read.

If we all agreed to abide by the rules set by scubaboard then it seems clear: remove/move posts that don't comply; leave the other posts alone. Any gray areas the mods should confer with the poster before moving a thread. When I was in eighth grade, I was looking for George Orwell's "1984" in the school library but couldn't find it on the shelf (it was in the card catalog). The librarian told me it was not checked out, but that a parent complained about it so they moved it to the 'questionable literature' room (WTH?!). Turns out there was a utility closet that was where, when a parent made a complaint the librarian agreed with, they shoved the book away in this closet. Only the librarians and the avid readers knew about it, so unless you went looking for a specific book you couldn't browse the whole collection. I remember seeing the titles "Time enough for love", "Dhalgren", etc. Even at 13 I knew enough to be infuriated (my parents actually admitted to making a complaint about a couple of the books I had brought home). Sounds corny, but it was true - little town in Ohio in the corn belt. Not quite the same, but close enough to make the point. The power was in the hands of one subjective individual who made the call in spite of the rules (no pornography, etc.)

I think we're probably making too much out of this, but I have felt like I need to be guarded in my posts in the past when they didn't agree with the industry line - even if I felt I had something valuable to add. I know, as a supporting member that I expect to have some say in how things are handled and I will vote with my wallet as will others. If compliant posts are moved/removed due to a difference in opinion as general practice, then I will find another board to support and lurk once in a while if possible. If the posts were moved due to a violation of the rules, then that is a different story.

I posted the section below to the other thread. There are a lot of things I find funny that others see as bad taste, and things I see as bad taste others find funny. I did not read the posts in question, but I am not an advocate of subjective censorship. If I find something distasteful, I ignore it and move on.

Variety is the spice of life. I get a kick out of a humorous thread or two in the main.

I have to agree though - unless you are a troll, you write a post for a particular audience and you expect it to post and remain there. If a post is made to the wrong area by accident, then a request is made to a mod to move it. If a post is offensive or otherwise violates the TOS then there is no question, it's removed. However, if a post is made in good faith and is compliant to the boards' rules, then I think that the post should stay where you put it (at the very least a courtesy notification is in order). If a person complains about a thread then a mod reviews it; but if it is compliant then it stays (life is full of little irritants).

I think the mods are trying their best. The ones I have met seem very cool and down-to-earth. Keep in mind they have day jobs and try to fit in the mod thing on the side. I think it is more of a 'well it made sense at the time' and 'how the heck do I back out of this without losing face' situation.

oh the other thing that i thought on reading those threads was that if the in-jokes continued that i'd have to figure out how to remove the florida section from my 'new posts' button... i already spend way too much time on scubaboard... moving them out of the regional section eliminates my ability to do that without eliminating the whole humor section...

mike_s:
well whaddya know... They move this thread also

Yes and if you'd read the thread, you'd know it was at the request of the original poster.

photohikedive:
yes, thank you El, if Site Support is the best venue for this, then I would be happy for your assistance.

PerroneFord:
Perhaps he just wanted your honest opinion Walter.

Perhaps.

I think if they moved every post that people joked around in, the humor section would crash the system and everything else would be empty(except DIR:D )

The problem here is that: there will never be an agreement. No matter what you say here, someone will be offended. Sadly the most logical step would be to put a disclaimer in front of the posts.

Do we really have to go to that point?

I mean it's bad enough we need to be told our coffees are hot, the way cars are driven in commercials are by professionals, we shouldn't smoke, etc....

Let's not add to that baby sitting bs. We're all adults here. Read it, if you're offended, move on. Just like on tv, if you don't like the show: CHANGE THE CHANNEL!
