Wife is planning a trip to stay with friends in Topsail Island, North Carolina around Sept. 11. Does anyone have information/recommendations on diving there or nearby?

I think Aquatic Safaris in Wilmington (www.aquaticsafaris.com) is the closest 'full time' operator to Topsail. You can also consider driving up to Morehead City. You might try asking in the NC forum.

They run weekend trips to wrecks. They are new in Surf City.

diving the sound is pretty cool where the old sound pier was..interesting to see what all the didnt recover after it fell 40 years ago..its on carolina blvd DIRECTLY across the island from the Sea Vista Motel (very easy to spot). There is no building there anymore because its privately owned but as long as you drop anchor near the pier and dont tie up to it, the owners dont mind..its not like they could do anything anyways as long as you arent on it haha...they dont own the waters! lol

Call Capt Tom Collins. www.spearitcharters.com He runs an nice 29' Parker as a 6 pack Charter. He specializes in Meg Tooth dives, lobstering and some spearfishing but he knows where all the wrecks are too. His boat is behind the Breeze Way Motel on the South end of the Island and he can have tanks there for you. I have been out with him twice and had a good time both trips. Last trip was 20th of October this year.

We stopped in the new shop there in Surf City and spend 10 minutes looking around, the young kid working behind the counter never looked us in the eye or acknowledged us in anyway :(
