I was talking with an acquaintance recently who helps train SAR dogs. She was telling me about water training the dogs (I had NO IDEA these dogs can actually sniff out a corpse that is underwater - amazing) and part of this training is having scuba divers 30 ft down with a signal rope. When a dog in the boat correctly sniffs out the location of a diver down below, they signal the diver with a couple tugs on the rope (is rigged horizontally so as not to give away diver's location) and the diver, who has a favorite toy of the dog's, comes up & gives the dog the toy. This sounds really cool to me! To get to go diving (granted, a boring dive) and help train these dogs. Anyway I am going to look into doing this - I am a novice diver but this sounds simple enough for me to handle - I am going to ask plenty of questions about exactly what's required, conditions, etc. etc. to see if this is really within my ability & how experienced the divers need to be. Have any of you all out there done this? I am excited about this possibility & just wanted to share.
