I'm a Fish!
Hello to all you experts!

I've paged through a looong list of threads about insurances on the board, but I can't find anything relating to my case, so I'm hoping some of you may be able to share your insights on this.

I'm currently insured (pro-insurance) via DAN for my diving, and me and my partner have an extended health and travel insurance through a company back home. This insurance is about to expire, and my insurance company doesn't want to renew it, because according to them I've been traveling for too long (almost two years, with two weeks back home during that time, and neither of us has ever made a claim with the company, and we've been insured with them for almost 5 years). Even if I still have an address back home, they are of the opinion that their insurance doesn't fit me, because I'm traveling all the time.

I inquired with DAN and they CAN do an extended travel insurance, but they recommended I keep the health insurance back home, because they only do emergency health coverage.
The extended health insurance and travel insurance cost me just under EUR800 per year for both me and my partner, and that's about the price I'm looking for. It can be 100-150EUR or so more, but not much more than that.
I've checked around for some global insurances, but those start from about US$2,000 per person per year and up.

Does anyone have some good tips or do they know insurance companies that would insure "people like me" and my partner? We both have dual EU citizenship.

Any help is much appreciated!

I have USA DAN Travel Insurance - CSA Travel Protection, A Europ Assistance Group Company - and I recall the policy has a 30 day travel time coverage period cap. While the contracts are without doubt different in your country, I would recommend that you carefully check the "days-away-from-home" issue.

if you're travelling around europe, perhaps the EHIC card?

The travel insurance thing can be a hassle. I have travel insurance through my work like you, then I have DAN. My parents, who winter in Florida have to be careful of the same issue, if they are away to long, first our provincial health care can drop them, and there travel insurance will only cover up to 90 days, then they have to either return to Canada and start again, or get extended insurance, which gets pricey. I believe they use Blue Cross for there insurance when in the US for the winter.

I know here people that spend a large portion of time in Florida or other hot spots for the winter, will often go down in November, then come back for a couple of weeks at Christmas. This makes sure they are current with the province, and then lets them restart the travel insurance when they return in Jan for another 90 days.

I understand there were changes in international rules on personal and liability insurance a few years ago. Resulting in it not being possible to get insurance from one country if you're domicile (or considered domicile) in another.

If you stay too long in any one country insurance you took out, back home, may become invalid.

Sounds like you need to speak to an insurance broker whom specialises in international travel.

We have DAN diving insurance and we use Travel Guard for trip insurance and we have been happy with them. You might talk to one of the TG reps to see what they have to offer someone in your situation.

You might also ask a Travel Agent for advice. Good luck!
