Hi!

Are there photography and videography gear (housings, cameras) designed for depths beyond recreational divers' limits?

Or, are tech divers somewhat limited in this area? :(

Just a curiosity of mine!

Thanks!

I'm shooting a Nikon D7000 in an Aquatica housing. Right now just doing videos. I haven't had it too deep, but with the upgraded spring kit added, it's rated past 400'. My interests only extend to about 200'. Haven't gotten a ton of use out of it yet, but so far, quite happy with it.

There are many people using cameras and shooting video beyond recreational limits. See the following link to see multiple videos in the 200-330 foot range. These were shot with Nikon D7000, Sony Nex5 and Nex7, canon 5D Mk III. http://vimeo.com/tonyland

Lots of underwater housings available that are good for 200-300 fsw. Some of the less expensive options are Fisheye/Recsea, 10Bar, Nauticam, Sea & Sea, and I'm sure a few others. Most of the higher-end housings for DSLRs are good to depths of 300 fsw or deeper. It depends on how much money you want to spend.

My current setup ... Canon T2i with Sea & Sea RDX550 housing ... is rated to 200 fsw. I don't see myself wanting to take a camera deeper than that, but if I did, Nauticam and Aquatica both make housings (for a higher price) that will allow me to take the camera much deeper ...

This video looks amazing. :D

I think Ikelite housings are rated to 200ft. Most aluminum housings are rated at least that deep, and the higher quality strobe and lighting systems (Light & Motion, Inon, Ikelite) are rated to 200+ft.

Also remember that just because something is rated to 130ft doesn't mean it will implode at 131ft.
