While swimming around noon on the reef just off of Roatan last month, at about 45 feet, we spotted a tube lying on the sand. It did not look man-made, but resembled the alien in The Abyss. The tube was about 4 inches by 30 inches, was a clear purple color, and did not appear to have anything inside of it (other than water(?)). The skin of it looked similar to what a jellyfish is made out of.

We did not want to poke at it for fear of damaging it, but no one could identify it from our dive group. The attached picture didn't come out terribly well because of how pale the subject was.

Thoughts?

Thank you,

Based on what can be seen in the image I'd agree with a pyrosome. Given the enormous size of a whale's Willie, that would have to do a LOT of stretching.

Update -- This turned out to be the egg casing from a squid. Most are smaller, white, clustered, but larger deep ocean squids apparently have this free-floating kind.
