Im curious as to what exactly Hogarthian and DIR diving is?

Ive heard it mentioned quite a few times by local divers, but never mustered the courage to ask them directly.

cheers,

You're probably going to get a lot of responses.

In very simple terms, Hogarthian diving (which I believe is named after Bill Hogarth Main) strives for simplicity, eliminating everything that isn't absolutely necessary. "Hog" divers typically use a backplate and wing (bp/w) with a single piece of webbing for a harness.

DIR ("Doing it Right") is a dive philosophy that embraces a particular hogarthian equipment configuration as a part (and certainly not the entirety) of an overall approach to diving that focuses on team diving and skill mastery. DIR divers have done some very impressive dives with an outstanding safety record, notably extensive cave explorations in Florida. The DIR system works for any kind of diving, but some feel it is overkill for strictly recreational divers. Others strongly disagree.

Hogarthian refers to an approach to gear configuration that stresses minimalism and streamlining.

DIR is an entire approach to diving, incorporating a standardized Hogarthian gear configuration, a commitment to team diving, an emphasis on strong personal skills, the use of standard gases, and well-honed emergency procedures.

Here is a good introductory essay on the subject, and you can find much more information about it here.

DIR also focuses on excellent dive planning and physical fitness. It is a holistic approach to diving. Hog is mostly an equipment configuration.

its like button fly jeans or traditional zippered jeans.. :D

In what way? One is an approach to equipment configuration, the other a holistic approach to diving in general. It's more like "button fly jeans or a living regimen which requires wearing button fly jeans"

Another popcorn thread.
