what length hose are you using on a stage or pony (slung configuration)

36 on a swivel first stage, 40 on a fixed.

I'm with Ari. Depends on the first stage. With a swivel/turret 1st stage, for me, 36" is plenty and routes cleaner than 40".

As an add-on - I tried Miflex hoses, and didn't like them. Their flexibility is tempting, but the slick cover made the hoses slip in the rubber bands, and the 2nd stage slip out from under the hose.

40" Miflex, w/a lp right angle swivel attached to a short, fixed 1st stage...Makes tucking the 2nd stage against the tank valve and 1st stage streamed-lined......The swivel/Miflex combo makes it easy to hand-off the 2nd stage to another diver if needed......
 
40 on non turret 1st stage.
 
Are you all doing the 40" because the reg is right handed? I'm new to the pony system and still setting up my reg. A picture on the setup and how it is used would be awesome.
