My wife and I are thinking of going to the BVIs this August.
We're experienced, mature divers that have been to most of the rest of Carribean. We are looking for a nice, resonable land based resort with good diving. We'd like to keep a week of hotel and diving under $2000 a piece.

Any suggestions.

Thanks,
Clyderyde

Leverick Bay Resort on Virgin Gorda might work. Condo's rent for about $1500/1700/wk as I recall. It's quite nice there, good beach, watertoys, on their own little bay - we went there twice but didn't stay there. A few shops/restaurants on property but a bit of a twisty/hilly drive to other restaurants in town and on the south end. You can also take a water taxi to Bitter Creek Yacht Club from there for another dining option. Leverick Bay does a buffet on Friday that most of the tourists and locals attend.

Diving is with Dive BVI, one of the best dive outfits I've ever used. There's no shore diving to speak of on VG though, it's all 15-60 mins. by boat to the best sites. I know DiveBVI picks up at Little Dix Bay Resort($$$), I don't know if they do also at Leverick Bay.

Downside of VG is it's harder to get to, it's by ferry or small commuter plane(Cessna), but it's quiet and peaceful on the island as a result. We couldn't get there and back w/o burning a day in St. Thomas due to flight/ferry schedules, ymmv since you're closer. It should be relatively quiet in August, it was this April which was the tail end of the winter season.

There's good warm water diving, other watersports and a few good restaurants on the island. A big attraction is the Baths, huge rock formations on the south end of the island, great beaches and good snorkeling in the area. Also from either VG or Tortola, you can dive the wreck of the Rhone - I'm not a wreck fan but I enjoyed it. We saw multiple turtles, sharks, lobsters, barracuda and varied reef fish during a week of dives. Not the most prolific fishlife but interesting nonetheless.

PM if you need more details.

DiveBVi has a shop at Leverick Bay. We did our OW dives with them 3 yrs ago and found the dive staff to be very helpful and easy to work with. VG is one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean.

If you have more than 4 people traveling it's worth exploring the possibility of chartering a private plane. It only takes about 45 mins. or so to get to VG from San Juan, so it is not necessarily difficult to get to. We went to Tortola in lat June are chartered our flight with Captain Warren Wheeler of Caribbean Wings, and had no problems at all. In fact, we were met at our luggage by a CW employee who escorted us to the plane. A great way to travel.

VG has a lot of great villas to rent, and you can often rent a larger one that is pro-rated for only the # of bedrooms you need in the "low season." We've used Hunter Butler of http://www.blueescapes.com/ for our last 3 trips to the VI, and she's been great to work with. She takes care of all of the details and knows the isands well. No worries, mon!

Cheers, alashas

There are a number of great villas, houses, and small cottages for rent...especially in August. Everyone is pretty much on summer rates so you can really save. The diving is great that time of year as the winds are down, the water is warm and flat, and there aren't many other divers out on the water. PM me if you have questions.
