I was guilty for many years of namako abuse when I lived in Hawaii. We did Japanese intro dives there, and there were lots and lots of namako lying around on the reef where we worked - bunches of big long skinny red ones and occasionally a couple of those really big fat brown ones.
I think the worst episode was when I climbed on the diving barge behind my interpreter while he was briefing a group of twelve Japanese women. I was wearing a shorty wetsuit, and I had half of a nice long red namako sticking out of the bottom of the suit at mid-thigh.
None of the women would look up at my interpreter and he was getting more and more upset by this lack of attention which was not at all helped by me asking him why they were ignoring him and all staring at their feet. I think he was a little hungover that morning as well.
The rest of my crew were standing behind the absolutely silent, unmoving women laughing like maniacs and the interpreter thought that they were laughing at him.
Finally, after about 10 minutes of this, just before he was ready to commit seppuku after killing me first, I spun him around so he could see what the problem was.
I am not proud of this, and if God is a namako, then I will have much to answer for, but wow - the fun that we had terrorizing our customers with namako was worth it, especially with the giant brown jobs!
Now I know that beche-de-mer is considered a delicacy in a lot of places, but I can't fathom how hungry I'd have to be to eat one.
 
Disgusting vile creatures, but fun for the whole family! I don't think I could possible stomach one of those critters, and I've eaten some nasty stuff in the past in survival school. I guess it's a matter of aquired taste from a young age, like me and beer :D, and then a survival hunger. In survival mode, the taste buds shut down.
 
Hmmm.. I wonder how they are prepared there. I thought one just ate the longitudinal muscles from the inside of the critter. Muscle is muscle... I think I could stomach it since I eat a lot of cow, pig and chicken muscle. Of the course the real question is "Is it as effective as Viagra?"

I have eaten sea cucumber, but I can't help with the Viagra question. It was at a banquet, one of those occasions where one just has to eat what is served and be polite about it. There is kind of a texture problem in my opinion. If I really knew what it was at the time, I'm not sure I could have gotten it down.

I think that you misunderstood that one! The eyeballs are from Tuna - sea-cucumber is a little different. My attitude to most food in Japan is don't ask. I let people know that I will not eat horse or whale/dolphin and would be extremely angry if someone tricked me into it. Other than that I often don't know exactly what it is I'm eating. The only two things that I know I really don't like are Nato (stinks!!!) and that orange sea-urchin stuff that you often get on the Sashimi plate.

I love the sea-urchin, it tastes like the bottom of the ocean (opinion for analogy only). I usually save it for dessert. But it for the veteran sushi-sashimi fans.
Have yet to try sea cucumber, I hear it is a delicacy. :10:
