I went to North Carolina this weekend to take a PADI Wreck Course with Olympus Dive Center http://www.olympusdiving.com They gave me an option to reschedule because the conditions did not look good but since I had made all of the arrangements, time off, hotel, etc., I decided to go for it.
Conditions did not cooperate. The Olympus did not go out Saturday morning because of rough seas but they had us check back in at 11 and we went out to make some inshore dives. Both dives were on the INDRA http://www.nc-wreckdiving.com/WRECKS/INDRA/INDRA.HTML. With many access points cut into the hull the Indra is a good wreck for training. The class swam thru the wreck at several points. Visibility was only 10 to 20 feet and there was a strong surge. On the second dive there was a school of Barracuda hanging out at the safety stop, there must have been a hundred of them. They appeared to be as entertained by us as we were by them.
Sunday was a total washout. We did do reel work in the park though. People walking by must have thought we were insane walking around the park with our eyes closed following a string.
Without the four required dives we were unable to complete the PADI Wreck certification. The instructor gave us the option of getting NAUI Wreck Certified, as only two dives are required. I passed; not wanting to settle for something less than I started out for.
I am going to schedule a return trip hopefully in October to finish up the last required dives.
