They provide regulator redundancy but don't provide gas redundancy. Take that for what it's worth. The only real point I can see is for doing deepish recreational dives on a large tank.

True. I can shut off one post when I would have a free-flow. It does not provide enough redundancy to enter an overhead situation.

Thank you for the insight into my question.
I think it gets difficult when the DIR community has to support a single manufacturer but the Beuchat looks to be the Y-valve of choice - it certainly looks safer given the knobs are lower.

I have an H-valve on my single bottle. It has just enough space to put two DS-4 first stages on it horizontally.

I don't know. There is no indication of a manufacterer on the valve. I got it from a dive shop in Amsterdam ( http://www.keesiedive.nl/kranen.htm ).
But I think you cannot use them in the US: we do not use burst discs over here
