    Hi all,
I still use the Motor Marine 2 EX and two strobes, the YS120 duo with cable and the YS30 duo in slave mode.
I like to start digital but don't want to invest again in strobes. Is't possible to re use this strobes? And if so what do i need to get it work on a digital system.

It's not a problem for me that TTL doesn't work and i know how to shoot in M mode if necessary.

And which type/ kind of camera (minimum specs) should i looking for. (DX-1G or housing with dslr)

I hope anyone can help me with this, i used the search but couldn't find anything about this subject. (or i'm a lousy searcher  )

(maybe the english is not that good but i'm just from the Netherlands, sorry for that. :shocked2: )

    Best regards,
    Ed

    HI Ed-
Thanks for your inquiry. Unfortunately, the YS-120 and the YS-30 would not be digitally compatible except with a hard-wired SLR system such as the Nikon D300, etc.
As an experienced photog, the DX-1G and the soon-to-be-released (Mid April) DX-2G compact cameras would be good options to investigate. They offer quality lens, sensor and features such as 10MP and 12MP resoluations, RAW, macro to 1cm, and manual shooting modes plus several other useful specs.

    Thanks Sea&Sea for your reply.

So if I understand it well i have the choice to stay with the motor marine, start all over again with e.g.the DX-1G or DX-2G with another type of flash or find a housing and dslr with hard-wired flash mounting to keep and re-using the flashes.

But what's still going on my mind is that I thought about a possibility to use the YS120 duo and YS30 duo in slave mode with one (or both) connected with a fibre cable and use the internal flash of the camera to activate the two flashes. Can you explain why that's not possible to work, even with the flashes (and/or camera) in manual mode? Or is't something technical with the exposure that's not possible to get solved?

I hope you can find the time to answer my question and see forward to it.

    Regards,
    Ed

    Hi Ed,
Digital compact camera's have a built-in preflash for metering and flash adjustment prior to the main flash. Digitally compatible strobes are designed to cancel this initial pre-flash(es) and fire the strobe on the secondary or main fire of the camera's flash. The YS-120 and YS-30 were engineered and designed prior to digital camera's coming to market, hence they do not have the capability to cancel the pre-flash.
Your options are correct as listed. A DSLR system, while more expensive, offers greater versatility and expansion with lens options, etc. While the compact digital system would be less expensive.

Hi ..? Thanks for the quick response :thumbs-up.

If it's possible to deactivate the built-in preflash in the camera and use the fibre cable, will it then work and is it then the same as a hard cable connection? (I know i can't use the TTL but that's not that big problem for me) or are there other facts?
I don't know if the DG-1X or DG-2x needed the preflash all the time to work properly but i think you can tell me that.

As you mentionted the dslr with housing is much more expensive then e.g. the compact digital as DG-1X but this camera has all the things i need, that's why i try to find a solution.

Typically a camera's built-in preflash can't be disabled and it can't be on the DX-1G and DX-2G, possibly other manufacturer's such as Canon or Nikon may do so but not to our knowledge. In order for the strobe to fire without a hard-wired connection, it requires a built-in sensor such as the on the YS-30 for slave mode.

Great to here this information from you. If i think further, is't then possible to buy the DX-1G or DX-2G with the Sea & Sea YS-27 DX and use my YS120 (this one has also a slave sensor) as a slave so the YS120 wil fire the same time as the YS-27 DX? And will the TTL then work?

    Is this the right thinking?
    Best regards,
    Ed

    HI Ed-
No this is not a compatible setup. The YS-120 will not function with a compact digital camera with preflash, regardless of use with a YS-27 or other digitally compatible strobe. The YS-120 will fire off of the initial preflash of the camera's internal flash.

Ok, now i know that I did the wrong thinking. I thought the preflash stays in the camera only (and the YS-27 DX ignore this preflash) and the main strobe fired the flash after the preflash. But the camera needs that preflash if i understand it well now and uses the preflash (also fired by the YS-27 DX) for camera settings.

I get confused by the text within the description "The YS-27DX offers a pre-flash cancel mode" so I thought, I canceled the preflash and the YS-120 fired the same time as the mainstrobe. But that feature can't be used in combination with the DX-1G i assume.

I want to thank you very much for all the time you spend for me. So I have to look out for a dslr and housing if i want to shoot digital.

    Regards,
    Ed
