Next time try Tugboat, Mushroom Forest, The Superior Producer or any of the other dozens of dive sites. Mark took me to Superior Producer and it was great fun. If you didn't find great diving at Curacao it was your own fault I am afraid as there are many great dive sites there.

sorry mike, but i have to really disagree. tugboat is way over grown with algae from the ships that are docked near by for way too long, mushroom forest is a decent site but definitely not great, and the superior producer is only a so so wreck dive. the diving in curacao is actually a big disappointment.
ocean encounters is even a bigger disappointment. this diving outfit has no clue about this industry. dealing with them was like dealing with a corporate lawyer. while they have nice boats and equipment, they have no idea how to help their guest's have FUN!and most of the people i spoke with who were diving with us felt the same way. they are also two or three times more expensive than the other operators around the island. don't waste your money!
there are almost NO PELAGIC'S on any of the dives. you can see arrowhead crabs, some anemone shrimp, and the occasional eel. after one month of being in curacao, there was a small nurse shark spotted on a mushroom forest dive, and the dive master working at OE went crazy.
there are many, many places where this would have been so common an occurrence, as to not even get much of a mention in the conversation at the end of the dive. curacao was supposed to be famous for great visibility, but in the two different trips that i have made there, the vis was poor at best. and i was there long enough for it to have changed if it was going to. it's true, what a poster wrote earlier in this thread, that the vis had to be better than in oklahoma, but the other poster didn't pay thousands of dollars to dive in oklahoma! if you are going to save all year, to go to some exotic place, it should be as advertised. curacao and ocean encounters is not!!!
the whole island looks like a desert, not a lush tropical island. and the parts that don't look like desert, are ghetto's, with trash everywhere, and dirty broken down everything.
i was so surprised while traveling around the island. the only part that looks like the pictures of the colored buildings we all see on the net, or on postcards, is the immediate area in punda, where the floating bridge is. but walk a few minutes away from that area, and you are back in the nasty broken down area's. it is also of note, that many local's will tell you not to be on the other side of that floating bridge at night. you will surely get robbed. it was told to me by many locals, that you have to be especially careful in curacao at night in most places.
sorry to be a downer, but i wish someone would have told me the honest truth about this place before i spent the money to come here.
if anyone isn't sure about what i am saying, just look up the local newspapers online, and use a dutch translator. there are so many better places to go and spend your money for diving and better atmosphere. a little research is worth a lot.
finally, if you do come to curacao, i definitely advise that you DO NOT DIVE WITH OCEAN ENCOUNTERS!!!! THEY ARE TERRIBLE!!! dive with the dive bus or silent immersion. everyone that i spoke with said that they are much friendlier, and really try to make your diving fun.

Hi all,

While I don't think it's helpful to comment on each and every statement made by porsc, I really do wonder how so many ScubaBoard members can report having spent enjoyable vacations on Curacao, if really everything were that bad...

It is correct that Curacao is not a "green" island with rainforest vegetation, and it is not a paradise for big fish junkies. But I am not aware of any general advertisement for Curacao saying different.

Also, I guess it happens at dive destinations all around the world that visibility varies. My experience after >500 dives in Curacao waters since 2004 is that most of the time visibility is 20m or more.

Finally, I never have been worried about my personal security (including any items I carry with me) anywhere at any time. If there are places on the island you'd rather not go (at night), we have the same thing in Hamburg, Germany (which is not a town with a reputation of being dangerous).

Maybe the Seychelles are paradise, but Curacao still is a nice place to live at or visit down here on earth.

Greetings from Hamburg
Andreas

Sorry PORSC can't let your post go without a response.
The ABC islands are DESERT ISLANDS How can that be a news flash? Curacao gets 22 inches of rain a year, a fact you can find any where. Just about every photo of the country side shows the Dividivi, Cossie and Cacti. For six months of the year there can be no rain what so ever. Before yesterday we had not seen rain since March. Now with two good downpours the Kibrahacha trees will be in full yellow bloom across the country side. No this is not a lush island and has never been advertised as such, but it is indeed quite tropical.

There are no Pelagics? Wow what another surprise for an island that is known for it's macro wild life. You can't go three posts on SB without learning that the ABCs have few large marine animals. Sounds like you did very little research before coming to Curacao.

I would agree that the SP, Tugboat and Mushroom are three very "touristy" dive sites. The wall to the East of Tugboat actually is a very nice dive. Even though I live here I rarely go to Mushroom, the so called signature dive of the island. Again your pre trip research leaves a lot to be desired. Can't help you with the water conditions. People who have been diving the last 6-8 weeks have for the most part had pretty bad vis. But generally I would say the visibility is good to excellent most of the year.

Having been to just about every island in the Caribbean, I don't think the third world poverty is any different on Curacao, and in fact probably better than most. I have never been to the Seychelles [they are on my Bucket list] but are they "ghetto" free? I grew up in NYC and there are many places in the Big Apple you don't go at night. Can't imagine not going to Otrabanda [the other side of the bridge] at night, would miss to many good places to eat as well as the new movie theaters.

Sounds like Curacao is not for you, PORSC. For anybody else who comes on this thread, there is a wealth of knowledge from the "locals" available, and we should be able to make your vacation enjoyable above and below the water.

I can't really have an objective argument with you about Ocean Encounters as I have worked for them part time. Truthfully dive boats and 15-20 divers are not my cup of tea and when I vacation I try to avoid the crowds. I think Nolo and Monica run a very professional operation but with moving a lot of people it can be regimented. All the DMs are very skilled and personable, and like any business some are more outgoing than others [maybe a Dutch thing]. I love to dive, any place any time, so I guess I make my own fun.

Some see thorns, some see a flower.

I agree with SM and Andreas completely. We chose to move here 2 years ago along with thousands of other American and European families. I go to all parts of the island, granted I'm not out at 3AM when there may be more inebriated people. We find that the half of year when we do get rain, the island is extremely lush, vis ranges from 40 on a very bad day to well over 100 feet, yes I do miss seeing the larger marine life so I dive with the last 2 posters, both over 6 feet  Mike's 3 suggested dive sites are also not on the top of my list but each has something unique to offer. If you had seen a frog fish or Manta Ray, it might have been rated a better dive site. There is trash and poverty but I've also driven through the Smokey mountains and seen worse. Even though the average wage is approx. $4.30 USD, the locals manage quite well, trust me I know the cost of groceries.
I'm sure if I leave my piece of paradise, I will alway be comparing new places to what we have here. The Seychelles must be beautiful and tough competition for comparisons. My only question is why you would decide to visit a second time?
I am sorry you were disappointed. But to others, while it might not be perfect, Curacao is a wonderful place to visit. As with the others, please feel free to contact me with any specific questions or concerns.

Curacao is hard to get to, but my 2 trips there have been great. We stayed at Habitat Curacao both times and loved it. Great house reef, nice bar and food, and good dive shop. Be sure to rent a truck and hit the dive sites on the west end. Mushroom forest was great, and if the boat is going to dive seldom don't miss it.

well, i don't mean to be offensive, but it doesn't surprise me that the people who live and work there, want to come to the defense of curacao.
but i was just trying to give a real honest opinion about what i experienced in curacao, and what many others told me, while i was there, as well.
and yes, the seychelles is absolutely gorgeous by comparison. but it wasn't just the seychelles that i was using for my comparisons, i have lived and worked all over the world in this industry. it is malaysia, indonesia, the philippines, fiji, samoa, australia, micronesia, and many other places like those. but also, the u.s. virgin islands, the british virgin islands, belize, st lucia, puerto rico and even mexico.
and it wasn't that i didn't read about some of those things before going to curacao, it was that they were worse than what was described, and expected. a lot of divers have never been to many exotic places, and therefore don't have a lot to compare it to, other than diving in a quarry, in a landlocked state. so i was just letting them know that there are a lot of other options that are much cheaper, easier to get to and a better value for their hard earned money. i didn't post to be offensive to any of you, and i'm sorry if it seemed that way.

ssshhhhhh about Seldom.
We call it that for a reason and so don't let the word get out.
But if you are at Habitat and I get on the boat we're going to Seldom/Stan's if I can talk you into it !!!!!

Porsc, I enjoy reading trip reports and hearing various opinions whether their experience is stellar or miserable. I can only imagine your frusturation when you traveled a great distance to only be disappointed. You have been quite fortunate to travel to so many exotic destinations. So far my experience has been limited to the Carribean which has been postive.

I was wondering if you addressed your greivances with OE in order to not only increase your satisfaction, but to provide them with honest feedback which to improve upon. I always appreciate reading feedback on dive ops. I just feel bad for the company who had no idea that their service was unsatisfactory only to be blindsided on various forums.

While I may disagree with your findings, it certainly was not offensive to read. That is why I enjoy these forums. Everyone has their opinions :)
