I guess I don't have a reason to doubt you but that's not what the page said when I clicked on it. It may have been changed but at the moment when you click on it, it says this:

The original page also was headlined something similar to
"Let's go shoot something" with a photo of the shark (and a couple other fish, too). The paragraraph you quoted, along with the photos, to me indicates that they go out randomly shooting fish, even sharks, is OK because they will go to good use. NOTHING was mentioned about knowing what to shoot, or being a responsibile steward of the ocean.
FWIW, I do not spearfish. This guys website is a turnoff to the sport and places it in a bad light.

No reason to play the man, netmage. I'm just trying to put the discussion in a different light. If you don't like the point, that's fine, but try responding to what is being said.

I don't see the need to bring spearfishing for food into the discussion, a nurse shark has no food value to speak of. Believe me, I'm all for spearfishing and spearfish often but I wouldn't even think of shooting a fish with no real food value, especially a protected species.

I actually don't normally spearfish either, which is to say that I don't have horse in this race. I do agree that they come across as a bunch of cowboys but I do get their basic message which is that it's fun. The last time I went spearfishing was years ago when I went diving with a guy who wanted to pick up a couple of jacks to take to a bbq he was going to. I've done quite a bit of crab fishing in the past, but in the Netherlands you're not allowed to do anything while on scuba.

And, as I mentioned previously, even if you only spear for fun and sport, how sporting is it to spear a nurse shark? They sleep peacefully beneath ledges, they RARELY swim freely and then, not very far or fast. It's as sporting as spearing a napping cocker spaniel puppy.

Diver0001,

the original picture had a caption that read something similar to (paraphrasing from memory but those who saved the original page could correct me) "this one was part of captain so and so's catch and release program.

It may be fun to spearfish. That's great! I know a lot of people that enjoy the sport, but like everthing else, it needs to be done responsibly. Shooting a shark, that is a PROTECTED species, is NOT OK in my book. And to justify it by saying that it survived.. It is not OK to randomly shoot stuff just because it's fun. A lot of people survive gun shot wounds, it doesn't make it Ok to shoot people! (Ok, a little bit of a stretch, but you get the idea).

Spearing a nurse shark that's napping and protected is pretty bad. Spearing a large friendly grouper that hangs out at a wreck is also pretty bad. There are bad people out there who are divers. I also do a little spear fishing but what I shoot is usually eaten, there are exceptions of course. I've speared trash fish in a stream that our fish and wildlife service has requested be killed off so they don't have to poison the river.

I have shot a docile ling cod that appeared to be napping though and I did not brag about the shot, I bragged about how good the meat was going to be :)
