My buying used steel tank experience.....

We have a couple of 72s from the 70's that passed Hydro without issues. I do remember something about tanks with liners, though; they can't be passed until the liner is removed, or perhaps at all, depending on what the lining is and whether it can be gotten out without damaging the metal.

Sadly, lots of shops just will not fill the old 72's. A buddy picked up half a dozen when Frank closed his shop. 4 passed hydro but he is limited as to who will fill them. I love the buoyancy characteristics of those cylinders. Worked well without a BC.

Maybe they are trying to sell a BCD.

If it is the one I am thinking of (well only one in Crossville) I hear nothing but good things about it. Can you take the tank somewhere else for a second opinion? I hear that sometimes they will condemn a tank if it fails. Is their any truth to this?

Well, I think, that guy needs to attend some classes in honest busines.

I was told that I should not consider tanks that meet the following.

• over 25yrs
• round bottom

Fortunately the LDS is willing to give me a decent deal on a used steel tank. My dive buddy uses a steel 130 so I may pony up and go that route. A steel 120 at the minimum.

It sounds like the cylinder was sent off for hydro. Inform the dive shop that under no circumstances that when the cylinder comes back from hydro that are they to condemn the cylinder. Only the hydro shop should condemn it in this case. Not saying that the dive shop can not - they can with your permission but given the BS they gave you I would not let them.

If the cylinder does indeed have a liner that can be a no-go for a VIP but that is no reason for it being condemned immediately. They are PITA but liners can be tumbled out most of the time. Remember the VIP is a scuba industry standard.

The problem is that even if I do a work around on the hydro, he still won't fill them. I'd have to get them filled elsewhere. I will try to get it back w/o being condemned to see if I can get the $$ back on it. Charlie has been a stand-up guy FWIW I trust him and don't feel like he is zipping me. He shows me the price he pays, then he marks it up 30% which is fair IMO. I was thinking about it driving home from church this eve. He said it was up to the hydro guy whether or not it would be a go. If I can get the liner out and get it to pass I'll try. I think it will be worth the effort. Either way, I'll have access to lots of tanks this summer at the facility and totally plan on taking advantage of that.
