Before tips and not including air fare, what should a one-week liveaboard in the Carribean cost? I think the Aquacat is around $2,000. How does that compare to other brands? Is Aggressor similar? Are there any cheaper lines that are as credible? How about luxury lines? Thanks.

There is a pretty good cost comparison in this thread. Take a look at post number 10
I'm going to have to look at my pricing a little closer....

If you could, uh, wait until after I visit your boat to reevaluate, that would be great!

Aquacat is $2395 + $225 in fees/surcharge. Surprised you don't know that since you're sailing with them in Nov.

Since I had the other 3 bookmarked I'll save you the trouble of looking them up:

Aggressor Fleet | Rates
Dancerfleet - Charter Rates

In my experience Explorer and Dancer are always cheaper than Aggressor. Although Aggressor owns the Dancer fleet also.
Check the specials pages also - this year select Explorer trips are $400 off.
Are there any cheaper lines that are as credible?
Blackbeards is $939+. It's also a lot like camping at sea. In the middle is Cat Ppalu - the third Blackbeards branded boat. Sometimes they sell extra spaces when their charter party doesn't fill the boat. At $1545 + fees.
How about luxury lines?
If you mean dive boats - Aggressor is the luxury line.

Explorer Ventures always seems to have some specials if your schedule is flexible. Did T&C with them last year for $1495. Money well spent!

Most Caribbean liveaboards, and worldwide liveaboards in fact, are in the $2000-3000 range for 1 week.
The big difference is the airfare cost to get there. Yes, there are some that are MORE than that (Galapagos, Truk, etc), but as a basic rule of thumb, before tips, the prices are all pretty close.

FWIW, it cost me 2100$ USD for 8 nights / 9 days for a condo in Grand Cayman, car included.
Add 300$ for insurance (my Canadian insurance co or credit card co does not cover me there)
Add 290$ for 3 boat dives
Add 12$ for tank rentals in the North part / turtle reef area
Add 50$ per person for food per day

Being able to relax in a land-locked bed every night - priceless !

A better comparison would be staying at a land-based AI diver resort like at Ocean Frontiers, that have a beach and great diving, compared to Sunset House with no beach.
Or some other similar AI dive resort in the Carribean.

IOW, what's the advantage? I see one with a live-aboard in Taiwan, or Galapagos, where it would just too much time boating from dock to dive point every time, with the dive sites in mostly remote locations.

But the Carribeans? Just go where the wind is at your back, walk in and dive. Like around Little Cayman, that I'm sure I would have liked better than Grand Cayman - for the diving.

Note that Aggressor is offering $500 off many trips for the remainder of 2012 if you reserve and book with deposit by end of March. I just booked T&C Aggressor using this deal, which made it cheaper than the T&C Explorer.
