here's the main question, does Made in USA mean anything to you?
28lb Trianta Wing
if you can overlook that fact, this is probably the best value wing on the market. It is basically a Halcyon Eclipse wing, made overseas, however it is very high quality and I believe still carries a lifetime warranty. I am normally a huge proponent of Deep Sea Supply, however in this case I don't believe DSS would be worth $100 over the Eclipse wing, especially if you prefer to use the STA. It is also highly likely that your backplate doesn't have cam slots if it is the original plate with the Pioneer wing, and in that case, the Eclipse 30 is one of the best single tank wings for use with STA's. If not, youre probably better off calling Tobin and asking if he can make a singles wing for you without the plastic bit so you can use an STA , or buying a Dive Rite wing.

After some research it looks like I have an old broken pioneer wing... So back to my original question. Should I go with a halcyon wing or does it make sense to buy a cheaper wing? Is Halcyon worth the extra cost?
Halycon is going to put the wing back in good working order, for $100? You only pay for shipping it to them? Why would you NOT do that? That is a bargain, and you will have a very good wing afterward.

Halcyon told me $100 for a bladder when I told them it was an eclipse. Now I find out it is a pioneer and the bladder is not replaceable. I sent it to Halcyon to see what they say but there is no internal bladder and the flange is welded I'm sure there is not much they can do

Ah, I get it. :) Now I see why you made the comment. Let us know what they say after they receive the wing.

All I can do is try. We will see what they say. They should get it tomorrow and let me know

I believe DSS will replace the bladder in one of their wings, if necessary, for $50. That sounds a lot better than Halcyon's deal.

OTOH, you cannot fix or replace the bladder in a DSS Torus wing yourself (e.g. if you get a pinch flat or puncture while on a trip). For that reason, I would be looking for a sale on a Hog wing or the DGX wing for $200.

I have a Hog 23# wing and a DSS LCD 30 wing. I have repaired 3 pinch flat holes in the LCD wing myself. Being able to repair my wing in the field (for SOME types of damage, obviously) is something I want to have. The LCD is a horseshoe design and I prefer a donut anyway, so the Hog 23 is the only wing I have used for single tank diving since I got it. I don't know what they are right now, but the Hog 23# was on sale for as low as $150 last Fall.

Stuart, pretty sure you have a first generation DSS LCD wing with a 12 mil bladder in it. There is a good reason we moved to the current 30 mil i.e. 2.5 times thicker urethane bladders ~9 + years ago.

All bladders can be pinch flatted, but the 30 mil urethane film we have custom blown for our bladders has proven to far more robust.

Understood.

I know that your wings rarely need repair of any type. But, I am curious, of the repairs that you do, what percentage of those are for pinch flats and punctures of the bladder? I think I've seen you say before that pinch flats are your most common repair, but I'm curious how much more often people get a pinch flat (or a puncture) as compared to other defects or damage that requires a repair?

I do think it is awesome that your bladder repair/replacement is so much more affordable than, for example, Halcyon!

Puncture is essentially unknown. Wings are seldom fully inflated, which means they simply comform to anything that might be sharp enough to puncture. Think of trying to stab a 1/2 flat volley ball.

Pinch flats are easily 95+% of all failures, with rest being associated with hoses or fittings.
