she must be confused, "west bay" and "laguna beach" are 8 miles apart and on different islands.
laguna beach on utila is never a "ghost town" and is not closing permanently

Excuse my last response; there is a West END on Utila, not a West Bay.

I misread that.

Glad to hear LBR is not closing permanently.

Thanks for the info.

after living on utila on and off for the last 9 years thats the first i've heard of a west bay or a west end but if you say so

Hi Katie and welcome to Scuba Board.
I'm writing because I'm a bit confused. I got an alert from this thread that there was a new response (I have it set as a "watched thread" because I'm trying to find out of LBR really is closing).

My alert said you replied the following post to this thread:

"It's too bad. The place is so nice. But it is a ghost town. I was just in West End in March and Laguna Beach was empty and the dive shop was closed. Rumour has it that it is for sale."

Yes, I did. Sorry. I saw Roatan and was thinking Luna Beach rather than Laguna Beach/Utila. Then I couldn't delete my post. Then I really wanted to understand what people who have been to both Roatan and Utila like about either. What do you like about Utila that you can't get in Roatan.

from our travel agent;

"Laguna Beach Resort is closing due to the fact that the current business model is no longer profitable in the current economy. The owners are shifting their attention to a new business model which involves using their dive shop in town, Utila Water Sports, and some locally owned villas. They have created an a la carte menu for both the diving and the meals."

No dates provided for the closure. We were booked for the first week of September. Note that they have not cancelled our bookings. They are offering a different land venue and pricing scheme. Laguna Beach Resort will be closed. We are asking our travel agent for more details regarding the "villas and food packages".

So i am posting here trying to learn more as we explore our options...

We have been to Roatan a hand full of times (CocoView, FI, AKR a few times each) but never been to Utila. Our trip has already been jumbled once since CocoView became full for the second week - which resulted in a swap of Utila-Roatan for Roatan-Utila. No big deal.

Our preference is still to try Utila for the second week as it will be something new. We have gotten stale lately as with only 1 or 2 one week scuba vacations a year we focused on dive-dive-dive places (Bonaire, Belize Dancer and T&C Explorer have been our last 20 trips). This is our first 2 week scuba vacation in a VERY long time (first was 2 weeks back to back in PNG on the Dancer liveaboard out of Rabual ).

Seen that in roatan...

Strangely enough, I also have an underwater picture of 3 bananas on the same dive...

Frist time for a whale shark, seen bananas lots of times before that dive...
