Hello all,

I just signed up today and the first thing I would like to learn about is liveaboard diving. I'm an advanced diver and been diving since 1986.

i am interested in learning more about:

best location?
best company?
cost expected? including proper tips and other not included charges (hope for no surprises)
I would travel as a single.
best time of year to go?

any other questions I should be asking that I left out.

Thanks

Jeff

All impossible questions to answer.

I recently did 2 weeks on the Red Sea Aggressor, both the Southern and Northern routes, and had a fabulous time. The boat, crew, and diving were great. For fairly obvious reasons, the Red Sea Aggressor is 50% off for much of the time left in 2016. I'm not sure you could get a better deal than this, 2 weeks for the price of one. You can fly into Hurghada, like I did, and have a 3 hour drive down to Marsa Alam, or you can fly to Cairo and fly to Marsa Alam directly. I felt perfectly safe on my trip. It should be noted than my wife and I did a 2 week trip to Cairo and the Nile earlier in the year and also felt safe the entire time. The advantage, of course, is that there are few other tourists in the country at this time. I was a single traveler on the Aggressor and had room to myself, no guarantee that you would. The rooms are nice but might be a bit close to share with someone you don't know, to each their own. I tipped 20% of the nondiscounted trip, they earned every penny. The entire crew bent over backwards to make sure the trip was perfect. The dive guides were excellent, the zodiac drivers, Islam and Emad, were dazzling.

Feel free to pm me with questions.

Good diving, Craig

Hi:

Okay, digging into your profile, it looks like you're 54 years old. certified 30 years and have under 100 dives. Either you took a really long siesta in there somewhere, or you've mainly done cruise ship diving? Where have you dove so far?

In your Introductions and Greetings section thread, asking much the same thing, Scubadada replied:

If you're a seasoned traveler or otherwise unintimidated at the prospect of lengthy round trip plane rides to 'real' foreign countries way off, that could be just the ticket. I've never been over there; I hear good things about Red Sea diving.

I'm more of a U.S.-based homebody, with a powerful dislike for plane rides over 4 hours and generally restricted to taking about a week off at a time. Plus dive trips are a lot of money to blow on myself, or a LOT of money to haul the family with me. Just so you know where I'm coming from as I answer your question.

Some time back, I started a thread, Picking a Caribbean Live-aboard, hoping to gain better understanding and help people in your situation. My 1st live-aboard was the Sun Dancer 2 (now Belize Aggressor IV) in May 2015; loved it & highly recommend as a 1st live-aboard (trip report). My 2nd, also a great experience, was aboard the Cayman Aggressor IV May 2016 (trip report).

I plan to say more, but our toddler is shrieking for me.

Richard.

Hi Jeff & welcome to Scubaboard. I'm newbie too, but has been diving for 11 years, including some liveaboard divings, but mostly in Indonesia. I do plan to do liveaboard diving in Great Barrier Reef in November & in Galapagos in December, so later I can give you my 2 cents comparison among the 3 locations later.

For now, I just mention my liveaboard diving experience in Indonesia. The 2 best destinations there, are Komodo & Raja Ampat. I've done liveaboard diving in Komodo 3 times & twice in Raja Ampat. I'm planning to do my 3rd liveaboard trip to Raja Ampat in November 2017. This time I decide to charter the boat so I can work with the cruise director to set up the itinerary the way I & my dive buddies like to do (13-day cruise from Ambon to Sorong, passing Banda sea & Raja Ampat). Currently the boat is almost full we have only 1 spot left to fill for male diver to share cabin with. PM me if you are interested to know more about it.

As far as the liveaboard company going to Komodo, I like Mermaid the most. For Raja Ampat, I enjoyed my last trip with La Galigo. You can see some of the pictures I took there in my Dropbox folder: Dropbox - Raja Ampat

For cost & best time of the year to go, you can check Liveaboard.com for detail. I found going to Galapagos ($600/day) is about twice more expensive than Indonesia ($300/day).

Good luck!

Okay, back.

To check availability on live-aboard boats, I go to Liveaboard.com and see how many openings each boat I'm interested in has. I've not booked through them.

Aggressor.com will show you their fleet of multiple boats & locations. Look at their specials page. On it, I saw:

"50% Off the Red Sea Aggressor

If you want to go pretty cheap, the Bahamas Aggressor could be a nice option. Warning: The water in the Bahamas gets cold in winter. I didn't dive there; I stood waist deep on a cruise ship sea lion encounter at Nassau, and for once, was glad I wasn't diving! Also be mindful of hurricane season in the Caribbean; unlikely to wreck your trip, but maybe you should get travel insurance in case bad weather cancels it on you. I'm told they Caymans can get cool in winter, too, and Belize is northward enough to get chillier in winter, too.

Explorer Ventures as a couple of boats in the Caribbean; one serves St. Kitts and Saba (I don't think they actually dive St. Marten), the other Turks & Caicos. There's also DivEncounters to think about. Live aboard.com will show you some other providers, such as hitting the Socorro Islands on the Pacific side of Mexico.

Richard.

Best in both categories is certainly subjective but my personal best list includes boats like the Arenui and the Maldives boats - see liveaboard.com for details. Four Seasons Explorer could be one of the best in the Maldives but both Aggressor and Explorer have boats there also.

Also Raja Ampat or Komodo are supposed to be pretty special. I've never been to any of these places. I'm kind of like drrich also, much over a 12 hr. plane ride or multiple connections and I start looking elsewhere. I don't have a full set of carry-on gear and if you time your arrival to the sailing day better hope your luggage makes it.

Best coldwater, the Galapagos or Cocos Islands. Best with reasonable travel from Phoenix (I live here too) probably the Mexico boats. Rocio Del Mar, Solmar V and the two Nautilus Explorer boats. Solmar V has a youtube channel so you can see all the Mantas, whale sharks, hammerheads, dolphins, big tuna, sea lions etc. they encounter on every trip. Those trips are mostly winter spring though then they move over to cage dive with the Great Whites off Guadalupe Island.

Rocio Del Mar moves up ocean to Rocky Point - you can actually take their shuttle from Sky Harbor to the boat - they picked my buddy up at his house in Glendale. It's good warm water diving, lots of sea lions etc. Popular though - all sold out this year and part of next.

Belize is a fairly easy connection from here since Southwest started direct flights from Houston or Denver last fall. I expect they will eventually fly direct from Phoenix also if they aren't already. Read drrich's trip report - he's done it - I haven't.

Another option could be the Kona Aggressor - there's a direct (maybe non-stop?) flight from here to Kona that due to the time difference leaves in the morning from here. Cab to the dock is your other expense since I believe they bundle everything else in the price. They mostly dive south Kona where most of the dayboats don't go. My buddy did a dive in the area once and was joined by a couple hundred spinner dolphins. It's called the cellphone liveaboard in case you need to stay in touch with someone here.

We did the Turks/Caicos Explorer also. Really early flight thru CLT to get there about 1PM. The boat typically doesn't sail till high tide at night. It's good deep wall diving with a lot of big pelagics and dozens of reef sharks, stingrays etc. Most seemed un-caring that we were in the water - I followed some sharks around more than once while they poked around looking for food. At one mooring doing my safety stop on the line I counted 24 Stingrays within visual range.

As far as fees etc. most spell them out - either on their fees page or in a FAQ. Typical fees include port charges/tourist tax plus depending on location a fuel surcharge could be up to $200 more. Also Nitrox might still be extra on some boats.

I tip 20% since the crew works hard - besides manning the dive deck, guiding on request etc. most double as wait staff and housekeepers as well as pulling watches.

Explorer also is offering up to $600 off on some trips this summer. If this is for a future trip, get on their mail list as they have an annual sale also.

I personally wouldn't do any of the Bahamas boats - my buddy did Aggressor a few years ago and said it was meh. Also they've had both a crown of thorns and now invasive algae at some of the sites they dive. There's many other options in the Caribbean that are better IMO. drrich is correct that the Explorer boat doesn't dive St. Maarten but you fly into there and out of St. Kitts - or vice-versa since they turn the boat.

I wouldn't do the Cayman Aggressor in the winter either - it seems like they can't make the crossing more often then and riding around Grand Cayman for a week 90% of the dive sites can be done from day boats - a few from shore.

Obviously hurricanes are a factor at most of the Caribbean locations also August? to November.

DivEncounters needs to update their website - MV Pearl ceased operations a few months ago.
M/V CARIBBEAN PEARL II IS OUT OF COMMISSION UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

I'm also reasonably certain that the Dive the World Club program only applies to guests who've dove with Aggressor previously. I'd also point out that the booking window for their Red Sea trips ends tomorrow. From here we couldn't get there in in under about 36 hrs. with two connections when I looked at it once after they brought the boat online.

Last thing is as a single diver you'll share a cabin with someone at the listed rate. Single supplements typically run about 50-60% higher. If you're lucky and the boat isn't full often the crew offers the single divers the option of using the empty cabins - happened to my buddy on Rocio once.

Richard,

Thank you. This is exactly what I was after. Yes. You got me right. Took a long hiatus with vacation diving instead of dive trips. Since 2013 I have done the bulk of my diving and got my AD. I plan to get my rescue diver shortly. I too (now that you mention it) do not want to spend many hours on a plane. Leaving from Phoenix and going through Texas allows for short trips to the Caribbean.

I've been thinking aggressor fleet and the two locations I have high on the list is Caymen and Belize.

I will review the posts and look over the suggested web sites and then (probably) ask more questions. As I get "more" semi retired I will try and spend more time in Asia and the other side of the world. Can't get away for weeks at a time just yet.

Too all. Thanks

Jeff

I've done livaboard trips in Cayman and Belize and they were fantastic and I would highly recommend them, other great locations you should consider in the Caribbean are the Turks and Caicos and Saba.

And since you are traveling from the west you might want to consider Baja and Hawaii too.

We always try to find a special offer pricing discount when we look for liveaboards. I got an email from Explorer Ventures and they are extending their summer special dates, see the link below.

When you do comparison shopping for liveaboards make sure you know if there are any extra charges (besides the divemaster tips) because sometimes vendors roll it all up into one price and sometimes they list their base price but then add on port charges and taxes and other items that will increase the cost. That's fine, you just need to know what you are paying so you can make an informed decision.

The prices listed for liveaboards are usually per person double occupancy, so you will either be sharing a room with a stranger or paying a hefty single supplement fee. I have heard that sometimes if the boat didn't sell out the Captain will let the single diver have a room to him/herself without the extra fee but that's not guaranteed.

Nicer Liveaboards are expensive but when you consider the cost per dive they become much more economical. You get to do 4 to 5 dives per day, including night dives, and you often have the chance to dive the most distant and pristine locations.

Have fun!

Thanks, I'm glad you caught that. Of course, that makes it all the more important to go on an Aggressor trip so as to qualify for future such sales!

Seems like in the Caribbean, Little Cayman gets talked up as the best more than the rest, with Turks & Caicos (via live-aboard) and the Lighthouse Atoll region out of Belize getting a lot of love, too. I've got the Bahamas in mind to hit someday, I suppose in part because it's such a well-recognized name. One thing to point out; this year I noticed come summer the Bahamas Aggressor switched to an itinerary hitting the island of Grand Bahama and Tiger Beach, which is much different from what Black Beards, AquaCat and Cat Ppalu target.

Leaving from Phoenix and going through Texas allows for short trips to the Caribbean.

Jeff, while I'm not endorsing them for 1st live-aboard trips, let me mention a some options for 'a few down the road' if you like live-aboard (I haven't done these yet).

1.) The M/V Fling out of Freeport, TX. Typically short trips, weather can blow you out, I'm told July 15 - Sept. 15 is a good time window to go with less chance of getting blown out. The Gulf of Mexico is not the Caribbean, and this is bunk bedding, not a luxury boat, but it gets good reports. Undercurrent as a free public access review of it from 2014.

2.) California multi-day live-aboard trips with Truth Aquatics (3 boats - Vision, Conception & Truth) or the Peace. Lord willing and providing, I hope to dive with Truth Aquatics this August on a limited-load Southern Channel Islands trip. In researching the California dive scene, I believe the following are worth knowing - cold water, lower viz. then many mainstream Caribbean locations, rougher seas vs. the Caribbean, kelp is a potential entanglement hazard, boats tend to feature bunk bedding and they don't provide 'free' guides leading customers on underwater tours. But that's where the kelp, seals, sea lions, giant sea bass and garibaldi are.

3.) There are live-aboards operating out of Florida. I have no personal experience with Blue Iguana Charters, but their webpage may give you some idea of potential offerings. For my Florida Keys trip I chose Rainbow Reef Divers out of Key Largo (trip report), and getting 4 dives/day from a land-based operation, I'd have to think through whether a live-aboard would be preferable since I could do a lot of diving from land.

Other land-based trips where you can do a lot of diving include Bonaire, CocoView Resort in Roatan (where the house reef supplements the boat diving) and Little Cayman Beach Resort (Little Cayman) or Cayman Brac Beach Resort (Cayman Brac) - I believe the latter 2 offer 3 dives/day, plus maybe a couple of added charge night dives, so you might get 17 dives in a week at LCBR or CBBR?

Richard.

Absolutely correct! We found a great special price for our first Aggressor liveaboard trip and after that we were eligible for (and took advantage of) the Dive the World Club special rates. It used to be "one diver pays full price and the other gets 50% off" but now it is "each diver gets 25% off" which is more fair for solo divers.
