Well the Makassar airport still sux, and you have to (?) go through there in the midst of the night with a long layover to get to Sorong. At least that is true from Bali.

To kill the outbound 8+ hr layover time in Makassar, we had a quick dinner inside that nice little-airport & stayed in the d'Prima airport hotel, 2min walk from the terminal to the hotel. A nice, clean-bed room for $22/night. I managed to have a $20 1-hour massage, nice warm-shower & a short rest in AC room there. d'primahotel by Home In Airport Makassar | Mobile Homepage

Our layover time was a moving target, so we didn't feel we should leave the airport but the time went by comfortably. A little window shopping and a whole bunch of reading and internetting at the "Starbucks" (I think it was Starbucks ).

Its also worth coughing up the $10 for the garuda lounge - at least theres food and coffee and drinks in a little more comfy layover

Wingy, you mean at Makassar, yes?

Yes..and if your layover is say ten hours..again id recommend grabbing a room at the AIRPORT IBIS Makassar...its at the airport and newish. You dont leave the airport so you cant get..trafficked lol...the Garuda lounge is up the other end from starbucks, past the massage place (good btw) - you can join the garuda club at the door to gain entry.

Slightly off topic, but if u like coffee.

Some good papua coffee can be baught inside a cafe on second floor where they sell those Indo style pastry rolls.

Ha I kinda miss the old airport w the flare of tropical 3rd world destination.

Strangely Tsuyoshi...so do I. I remember the ridiculous on off run past the sad aquarium on lion air flights to Manado. I still have no clue why they would make you get off run into the terminal, upstairs, back on, shuffle boxes of roti and durian on...the good old days when people would fly with a disgusting fruit in their lap.

New airports or flashy upgrades make me kinda sad...paved paradise to put up a parking lot..

LOL when taking my carryon out of the over head bin upon landing in Sorong, I accidentally moved a long light box and all kinds of dried weedy stalks and seeds fell out scattering over a few of the passengers. No idea . . .
