All I can say is God bless you guys and anyone who risks their own life to rescue or recover another person, often times someone they've never even met. I find it comforting for my family to know that if I were the victim of such an accident, divers would be ready to drop what they're doing and make the sacrifice to bring me back to my family. Thank you guys for that.

I'm also grateful for ScubaBoard and the A&I forum. I've learned a lot from studying these incidents and the many threads and discussions I've participated in on here. Those who participate regularly are likely to be better and more knowledgeable divers and that is all credited to the Internet and sites like ScubaBoard. It would take thousands of dollars and many hours to acquire the knowledge shared here without the internet.

However, there's usually a caveat for most things in life and it's no different here in the A&I forum. I see no harm in possible speculation as long as the poster disclaims it as such and there's a relative connection to the topic and incident. For the most part I think contributors here are pretty good about keeping the discussion focused. But, I often learn more about diving from the what if's and the subsequent solutions than the actual incident itself. The mods here do a pretty good job keeping the A&I forum in good order.

So, that said. While condolences are not intended for this thread it's hard to not say a prayer to the families and hope they find the strength to carry on and hopefully the good memories they shared with the departed will be a source of that strength. So God bless you and know you're in our thoughts.

As for this incident. It appears there is much to be learned. I have a lot of questions. I will wait before asking them in the hopes that more information will come to light. I'm actually shocked and thankful that we have received as much information about this accident so far. Some may already have all the answers. Some may know what went wrong and how to prevent it. That's great for them. It does not helps us the least bit if we don't know too. If the family doesn't want the information shared then I respect that. If they are ok with it, then I believe law enforcement, recovery and rescue teams and investigators owe it to us to give us that information in a reasonable amount of time. Otherwise, the next recovery could be from a person who might have been able to avoid a similar fate had they simply had the information.

Anyways, thanks again to everyone. Safe diving.

I live fairly close to Florida cave country and I have often thought about cave certification. When a subset of divers makes some of the statements I have seen, it makes me glad I’ve never followed through. The “leave us alone until we decide to talk” isn’t an inviting attitude. And the religious insults are downright rude and arrogant.

We divers are self-policing. We provide training, certification and general rules and/or recommendations for a dangerous sport, all while trying to limit accidents. Information is the best way to limit accidents while countering rumor and speculation. Unless we would like for others (government agencies) to step in and regulate us. We don’t live in the dark ages. It’s rare when giving information quickly is a bad idea.

And Kristi, you won’t’ need my real name. I will gladly ban myself from your shop and refrain from stopping next time I pass through.

People will always speculate, guess, discuss possibilities until adequate information becomes known to limit possible explanations. This happens with aircraft accidents, well publicized auto accidents, weather events, etc.

Complaining about is doing that will not end it so it is best to be forthright with relevant information as it becomes available.

Even if I knew everything about this event now it would not likely make me a safer diver since I have no plans to be that deep or in caves...much less both at the same time. However, it would still be educational to understand what happened.

Would you rather have piecemeal statements of questionable accuracy? If not, then you'll have to wait till something is published. So, yea, when we decide. We spent the day making sure everything that's going to be released is accurate and all the details are correct. Sorry for not operating on your time. We all have other obligations (family, jobs) besides hastily writing a report to placate the internet's desire for 'now'.

Also, I hate to break it to you, but this isn't a 30ft reef dive. There's a lot of stuff going on and documenting all of it and doing it accurately takes some time. The details matter, and I don't think anyone involved with the recovery wants to leave out anything just so they can "give information quickly".

Btw, you're more than welcome to get off your wallet and do what it takes to be a part of this. I'm trying to make a difference. Are you?

I applaud this. Take all the time you need and knowing you: I'm sure it WILL get published. As I said before, this is a huge departure from most every other accident.

We don't need it quick... we just need it when it's ready.

Just a side note - I believe @NetDoc was speaking a bit in jest about Kristi banning him (or anyone!) from her shop. My admittedly limited interaction with her in no way indicated she would do that. Please don't let that perpetuate. Thanks.

I dunno. I can think of one or two names where it's probably not a joke.

Okay. Well, can we please not continue in that vein until Kristi herself makes it clear?
