Leisure Pro has an amazing price on the Suunto Vyper right now on their daily deal... $150.

I had been leaning towards buying the Suunto Zoop for about that price. As a brand new rookie diver, is there any reason not to snatch up one of the Vypers for $150?

The Vyper has a backlight which is nice for night diving vs phosphorescence on the Zoop. The sampling can be changed to be finer. Personally like the old display on the Vyper than the pixel display on the new version. There are a few other nice features. For $150 I would buy it over the Zoop.

Edit to add some people gripe about the Suunto RGBM but having dived it over multiple days with multiple deep 100+ dives. It is not all that unreasonable but we also dived what would be consider proper multi-level dives.

Nope. Unless you believe in One True Algorithm whose name is not Suunto RGBM.

Ya...I got that email special, I was thinking of getting a back up computer. But the Mares puck is 149.00.

How about as a back up and convenient wrist mounted reference for info while my primary console mounted i300 is the algorithm I dive on. Is it worth the convenience to have a cheap reference on my wrist? I'd love and will have a nice one on my wrist eventually but not at this point in my journey.

Retracted after a conversation with Leisurepro:
Aqualung used to distribute the Suunto line in the US and the reason the prices were so reasonable compared to other Suunto dealers is Aqualung does not provide any warranty support to Suunto/Aqualung products sold thru Leisurepro. So they offer their equivalent warranty which means you send it back to them only. It also explains the good price on the Zoop. This may be a closeout of those models.

On the flipside, how could Leisurepro do anything but replace one sent in, they're not a Suunto dealer so can't send it in to be repaired at the service center.

Earlier this year Huish took over US distribution so IDK what has changed. Except I see two prices online - one significantly higher than the other. Beach Cities in CA sells the Vyper for $449 - I doubt LP is discounting theirs $300 unless it's a close-out.

I have a Gecko which is the Zoop predecessor. It is both really easy to read and figure out if you're idle for a while. I leave the manual at home when I travel. I bought from a licensed Aqualung dealer and paid almost $400. I could've bought two from LP for that at the time had I known.

It doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it - at that price I might. I've been diving computers for probably 15 years now - I'm an early adopter - and I've never had any problems except with an early Uwatec which had the battery soldered in encased in fluid - makes a nice paperweight...

You're I300 is a rebadged Oceanic made by Pelagic Pressure - Aqualung bought them/took over distribution in the US this year. So it's got a much more liberal algorigthm than the Zoop/Vyper - which can only be set more conservative.

So when one tells you go up and the other says you have 10mins dive time left - which do you believe?

For $200 you can buy an Oceanic Bud. With a little research I'm sure that you can find that one of their Dual Algorithms matches your I300. Bud also comes with a nifty clip to attach it to your BC or stow it in a pocket.

Actually one of the threads here somewhere discussing the change last year has a post by someone cross-referencing the model #'s with the old Oceanic models.

IIRC next year there's going to be a new line of Aqualung branded computers from PPS - yours and the I450 were intermediate models so they'd have something to sell in the interim.

You might look at a Puck instead and compare algorithms. I think you'll find it to closer to your i300 than Suunto's - known for being conservative. Part of why I bought one.

Thanks for the headsup.. Got one for my wife's backup.

Check the warranty from Leisurepro.
.

So there is no warranty mentioned and leisure pro is closed and not taking phone calls.

Plus this daily deal is over before the store opens to ask. do you know if it is possible to buy from leisure pro tonight but call in the morning and cancel the order of there really is a brand new dive computer sold with no warrenty?
My kid wants a dive computer, but I hate to think I might be buying a paperweight.

I just bought one tonight with paypal as a backup for my wife...
It is a new one they have been $ 250.00 recently 150.00 is that one day thing.
It is a good for a starter or spare.
