    Diving solo on Similan liveaboard?

I was out on a Similans trip a month back. I can tell you that all dives began with 2-3 buddy pairs in a group led by a DM. When there was an odd person out that person buddied with the DM. People could finish the dive on their own time. I imagine this is the norm given that most of the sites...

Avalon U/W Clean Up February 21st

I signed up for Casino Landing. Let me know if you are looking for a buddy. As the Cleanup is not until 10:30, it would be nice to do a Casino Point dive in advance of the Cleanup dive. Casino Landing makes the Casino Point pre-dive very easy. I did the Cleanup 3 years ago at Casino Landing and...

    travelling with backup

Dandydon -- thanks much for the info. No need to worry about the argon comment. I just didn't go so far as to say that in actuality I will only spot my brother a 13 cu. ft. cylinder that I use for argon after I carefully remove all traces of the argon sticker, remove the valve, and flush out the...

    travelling with backup

My brother just had his 20 cu ft pony bottle confiscated from his dive bag by airport security folk who were supposedly operating under a national agency acronym about 3 hrs ago. They paged him after he deposited his luggage at the ticket counter. He is headed to my place and we are then headed...

    Favorite SoCal boat

So far I've done the Sand Dollar, Bottom Scratcher, Sun Diver, Second Stage (6-pack), Spectre and Peace. Favs or best experiences have been on Sand Dollar, Sun Diver, Peace and Second Stage. I have been diving Sand Dollar most because most of the people I know dive on it and I know the...

Trip Report - San Miguel on the Vision

Thanks for the trip report. I've got to get back to San Miguel now that I have a serious camera setup.

    Why E8s and not E7s?

For me its a question of boat fills. The boat I dive most often provides low pressure fills only.

    Why E8s and not E7s?

I would say that you aren't missing anything if you can still reach your valves once you find the balance point and the 1st stages don't project into your head. We now live in an HP world with respect to pressed steel after they phased out the LP series.

    Can't reach the valve

There are a multitude of tips and tricks that are in the archives of scubaboard. I know because I faced the same problem and found the answer there. If you have an sta, I would try getting rid of it and going sta-less -- this will bring the valve closer (I remember an Uncle Pug post on this)...

    advanced kicks with splits...the video

A panel of judges ... I love it! I'll offer as unit of measure that the length of the diver is 6'3". I concede that only one diver unit gets traversed in the video -- so there's no need to go to the judges. Thanks for making things interesting, boogie. Actually we tied fishing line to my...

Okay Uncle Pug, you're on, but no noodles with the dive ;) .

    advanced kicks with splits...the video

I must say that you guys' comments have made the whole enterprise enjoyable. I have to own up to the real motivation for doing it being to make 10 bucks off of the "Boogie 711 Challenge". So it's going to cost you at least that for the jet fin video.:D

Please feel free to use it to show students. Thanks for the positive comments.

    advanced kicks with splits...the video

Me and another scubaboarder (PnL, videographer) got motivated to video tape a frog kick and backward kick with splits due to this being a recent topic of discussion. We used Apollo biofins and Atomic splits. The Apollo's are an old pair that I have long since stopped using (if you like them they...

    Heavier plate, or P-Weight?

Therein is the rub. My m.o. is buy, try and ebay. Repeat as necessary. I have tried 4 different backplates, 2 different sta's (3 if you count sta-less), 3 different wings, 4 sets of fins and about 4-5 weighting schemes before settling on what I think works well for me. It was an evolution over...

    Heavier plate, or P-Weight?

I found that there was a turtle effect, in that if you rotate sideways the moment of the cylinder began to pull me around on to my back. Personally I don't like this feeling even if I can control it as it detracts from the feeling of being weightless. Can't say that it would happen with all...

    Heavier plate, or P-Weight?

The second possibility may leave you more options for getting trimmed out as you have the possibilities of using half a p-weight at the top or bottom of the plate, instead of the full p-weight. You could do the same with a 12 lb plate, but that's getting to be a lot of non-ditchable weight. I...

    Split fins/Frog Kick...No problems..

Did a trial in a pool today with apollo biofins and atomic splits. Both fins can do the frog fine. We have it on video. Reverse kicks were a different experience. Can't get anywhere to speak of with the apollo's in reverse. There just seems to be no bite. It was possible go in reverse with the...

    Sundiver 11/8

I have been out on the Sundiver twice and both were good days. I have another boat I have gone out on regularly for the past few years and Sundiver is looking nicer and nicer as we keep hitting the same ole spots. Chris

    Split fins/Frog Kick...No problems..

I am thinking of taking the boogie711 challenge and attempt to video a backwards kick with splits. Since I sold my atomics I am going to borrow some . I think I have already recruited a videographer. Should be fun. I won't be ebaying my jet fins any time soon though.
