The Auto mode is totally inadequate to underwater shots as the artificial intelligence in the camera can't work out what is that is being shot due to the different medium. In the worst case you should use in Program but avoid auto as the plague as the camera will try to detect the scene it is shooting and introduce a lot of lag

Rumrunner_1492, I'm new to Underwater Photography(Photograpghy all together) as well. I shot everything on auto for two reasons 1. to give me a base as a starting point and 2. to see what the camera can do on it's own. I have read a lot of articles including The Underwater Photography guide and will start experimenting with settings and compositions and hopefully see some improvements.
