Yeah, I really don't see the 40" working without a swivel. If the OP doesn't want to use one, he should consider going to a long hose. The clip on the reg, however, isn't specific to the 5' hose. I used one with my 40" and now with my 7'. Any "longer" hose should use one to keep the primary second stage from getting damaged out of the water and to allow easy stowing in the water.
 
The under the arm method with a 40" hose leads to even LESS loop sticking out than with a 7' hose

Learning to dive on the internet

Not seeing the relevance of your point here. I always turn to the 'board for advice before spending money, getting new gear, traveling, knowing which whiskey to drink, info about global climate change, ....
