I have had contacts wash out while swimming with my eyes open and no mask on. It's one of the easiest ways to get them out when you want.

My wife will have to try ... once she says she is ready to... (we are working on this whole being comfortable in the water thing...)
 
Probably best to bring extras, when I go diving I always bring an extra pair on board, just in case.
 
My wife followed me around in the dinghy for 35 years before she decided to learn to dive and take the open water class. She's now been diving for four years and loving it. Just bought herself a drysuit this week.

I hope your wife likes diving as much as mine.
