Am I too cautious?

I do not think you are too cautious. I often dive with a buddy who tends to keep to far a distance. For dives up to 15m this does not bother me. For deep dives I will not dive with him. I do not feel comfortable at 35 meters with a buddy who is to far away to help. I would feel safer by myself with a small pony.

I tend to avoid swim throughs, as they are overhead environments. I have also seen the person in front of me have their hose caught, and go crazy trying to get loose.

I am not risk averse, more death averse.
