Keep the info coming! I was to be up there and got pegged with other obligations that required I commit to them first or lose a LOT of what I've worked so dang hard to create this year!

Don't mean to scoop Louma, but I'm sitting in the ScubaBoard booth right now and no one has posted any photo's. Our members are starving for DEMA show info, so here's my photo version

DEMA Orlando Highlights and Pictures!!

Wow!! This show is huge! Record crowds packed the entrance way jammed
to get
inside for the 10 O'clock start of the show.

DSC01632.jpg

I can't describe everything so I'll just hit the pictures and comments
as I
saw them. Yes that have a dive tank to try stuff out in. What kind of a
show
would it be if we didn't have one of these to splash around in

DSC01633.jpg

Lots of new underwater LED lights.

DSC01634.jpg

High def video camera housings are everywhere!

DSC01635.jpg

DSC01649.jpg

DSC01662.jpg

There's plenty of very complex re-breather units

DSC01673.jpg

Travel destinations dominate the show. This picture is just the
Cozumel
aisle!

Here's the sand sculpture of the Curacao booth

If you're a wreck diver and you have 400 feet of line out of the reel,
that
sure is a pain in the butt to wind it all back up. This is an electric
underwater reel!!. You hold a magnet switch up to the side and the
electric
reel starts winding it up. It spools it side to side automatically so
it
doesn't bunch up and has tons of overrides and safety features.

DSC01671.jpg

Atomic has the brand new spring straps with variable tension spring to
fit
nice. It also incorporates their any position fin buckle with pull tab
on
the spring.

DSC01638.jpg

Force Fins has two very unusual looking fins. I didn't get the
specific
features and benefits.

and Duo-Vortex fins

and Six Gill fins:

And this very unusual fin looks like a dolphin's tail, it's called a
Fly
Mor-Fin

DSC01664.jpg

Alright now this was a very cool idea for a fin. It is a spring loaded
paddle that flips up to your shin. The concept is that when it is
flipped
up, you can easily walk around the boat deck or get back onto the swim
ladder. You step on it with your other foot to lock it down into place,
or
use your heel to release the catch and flip it up underwater.

DSC01660.jpg

This is very cool and I'm buying one right away. It's a combined dive
alert
and mini-hammer

DSC01667.jpg

Another underwater beeper saying it can be heard 15 feet away

DSC01665.jpg

There has been some discussion of this digital dive recorder already on
our
board. It is a self contained recorder of depth, time, etc and provides
back
up info.

DSC01663.jpg

And a picture of the Oceanic Digital HUD mask $1400!! No firm
available
date.

DSC01661.jpg

Here is the new SeaQuest I-3 lever controlled inflator and dump

DSC01643.jpg

Another good idea, it's a frisbee throw line. The line is wrapped up
under
the frisbee and then you throw it just like a frisbee to your diver. It
can
be thrown 100 feet and provides over 11 lbs of float.

DSC01659.jpg

A new scroll-able underwater slate with 8 feet of paper for writing a
ton
underwater

DSC01658.jpg

An underwater ROV complete with color/infrared camera. Even has a
grabber
to pick stuff up!

DSC01657.jpg

Heated Wetsuits!! This wetsuit has a chemical heater that you put in a
pouch in the small of your back and it will keep you warm through your
dives

DSC01654.jpg

An underwater personal submarine

DSC01650.jpg

This also was cool. It is an ascent warning indicator call MARA. It
clips
to your mask and beeps if you start coming up too fast. It also beeps
at 15
ft to tell you to stop. It is a disposable unit that should last 5000
dives
or over 5 years and estimated retail price should be about $99. It's
water
activated and the beeps can only be heard by the user.

DSC01648.jpg

And here is a picture of the Sunuto's Cobra2 and Vyper2 new computers.
They
can now
run two gases and the displays have larger letters.

DSC01642.jpg

Both Faber and PST were at the show. PST says they are still
manufacturing.

Remember the AL80 tank boot with wheels so you can roll it down the
dock

The Scuba Board Mermaids!!

DSC01647.jpg

More later............

Awesome!!!!!

H2Andy:
there's somebody staring at the mermaids?

where?
Right here! :D - I think i've found my next dive buddy ... or should I say ... buddies. :eyebrow:

-----

Mike.

OUTSTANDING job, johnoly!

we want more mermaid pictures!

Most divers I know would like to attend DEMA, but are unable because of the restrictions set in place by the DEMA BOD.

I have attended every day of this years event and would like to relate the DEMA experience for those who cannot attend.

First and foremost - hey it's a blast:popcorn: Scuba stuff everywhere - and the mermaids in NetDocs little corner of the world aren't too bad either:)

New gear is on display! Where else in the scuba world can you see, compare, touch (and sometimes try out) just about every piece of scuba equipment from most every vendor around the world!!!!!!- Ahh if I could just win the lotto - I could own a little bit of everything:crafty:

The reality is that it is a manufacturer trade show. All attendee's get a color coded badge that allows the manufacturer reps to quickly recognize store owners, authorized store buyers, store staff, and independent instructors and divemasters.

The manufacturer's try to protect their dealerships by not selling to anyone who isn't a dealer (which has always made me wonder how those low cost web stores continue to have all of this gear to sell on-line).

If you are a store owner, or store buyer you get the full and undivided attention of all manufacturers.

The rest of us do not get that preferential treatment. Some manufacturers are gracious enough to talk with the "other" dive industry professionals. Some manufacturers won't even acknowledge that you are standing in their booth. :shakehead

One must again recognize that the manufacturers want to sell to the dealers, so talking to instructors and dive masters just doesnt fit into their marketing scheme.

The live aboard and resort operators are eager to talk to anyone in attendence, and when you ask them, they will tell you they wish the diving public were allowed in. Especially when DEMA is in Florida! So stay tuned, someday everyone may get in!

To those manufacturers who do take the time to chat with instructors and dive masters - Thank You! Everything we know about your equipment may lead to a sale for your company - even though a lot of us do not try to sell equipment, the reality is that we do get asked a lot of questions about your gear.

I would love to say who the gracious vendors were, but since I didn't talk to every vendor I am afraid I would inadvertently leave someone out and that wouldn't be fair and that isnt the purpose of my post anyway:)

This morning we had around 70 high school students participate in a Scuba Experience. It's always great to see the smiling faces of those who take that first breath underwater!!!!

If you get the chance to attend, GO! It really is fun and exciting.

Hope to see everyone at NetDoc's Scubaboard party tomorrow night where ALL are allowed and ALL are treated the same:)

Cheers

Oh I so can't wait to get there tomorrow. Kicking myself for not going sooner now. Anyway, need to run and start making my christmas wish list and those tank boots are at the top!

Thanks fellas, it is appreciated.

I’m totally brain dead from my second full day at DEMA and I still haven’t seen all that I want to soak up, but a couple of non-equipment items caught my attention and kept me pretty busy today.

DEMA has helped sponsor some major projects for Ships2Reefs and Rigs2Reefs, which helped them gain over $1 million in funding for cleaning up ships to be sunk as artificial reefs. Unfortunately I missed it this morning but President Bush sent one of his environmental advisors down here and he spoke to some of the leaders in the movement to create more artificial reefs – which excited everyone involved. I spent almost 2 hours in a meeting afterward where we discussed the degree of practical versus regulatory cleanup needed of a ship before sinking it and how the government can sometimes hamper the reef projects by demanding cleanup that is unnecessary but expensive.

I was surprised by how aggressive some of the newer and smaller dive agencies were at recruiting instructors and offering very attractive crossover packages to get new instructors under their banner.
