great photos, I am newbie, just curious to how long it took you to be able to take pics like that. I think I am o.k. with topside photography but just starting out with the u/w stuff
Scotty, here I'll give you a quick chronology...
I had a little topside experience with film/ photography from many moons ago...
2005 - just got back into diving with approx 25 dives under my belt/ picked up a Canon S70 p&s.
Shortly after, picked up an Inon strobe, started going on liveaboard trips and various overseas trips in the region, and started pestering people on SB & wetpixel for tips...
probably did 100+ dives that year...
Mid 2006 - Decided to upgrade to a DSLR setup and then it was slippery slope from there. Took a quick u/w course with Mike Veitch which really helped on all aspects.
Since then, I've probably logged another 200+ dives, and most of those with a camera.
I've been fortunate to have been transferred by my company out to Hong Kong where it's convenient to hop out to places like the Philippines and with easy access to all the marquee sites in the region.
But I really have to give a lot of kudos to sites like SB, wetpixel.com, digidiver.net, etc. where so many people of various experience (from amateurs to pros) are willing to share their photos, experiences, and most of all their advice.
Just my bank account wishes I had picked up a cheaper hobby like darts than u/w photography...
If you go to
my flickr page, you can see the progression by going through the sets. (Komodo+ Similians - early P&S days in '05, etc)
cheers,
