No one is saying to do it that way dude.

That would be just plain wrong for too many obvious reasons.

The way I describe works extremely well under conditions described earlier. (Please don't do it my way though, or you'll die).

It sounds like the way I described is like Tony's watch.

Tony, does it give you your average "rolling depth" as you're diving? Or only at the end on the surface?

Actually I don't know whether it gives "rolling depth" during a dive. I typically just put the watch in my drysuit pocket and use it afterward to download my dives to my pc so I can examine my profile, stops, etc.

Well I pulled up the manual on line (what did we do before internet???) and it looks like average depth is only calculated after the dive.

Sitting here counting the hours until I leave for Florida for the holidays ( <72 hours now) I was looking over my past few dives on my Citizen Hyper Aqualand watch, which records both max depth and average depth. So, I started wondering whether there are any tables available that calculate NDLs based on average depth of a dive.

I don't think you could use the standard PADI tables since a square profile dive of say 100' would actually have a slightly shallower average depth once you calculate in the descent and ascent. I guess you could take average depth and pad it by say 5% or 10%.

Anyway, anyone know if average depth tables are available or anyone use average depth with standard PADI, NAUI, etc. tables?

What you're talking about is eliminating the rounding error involved in applying maximum depth to every table calculation. Your logic is basically sound and it seems to me that any run-of-the-mill dive computer will do what you describe.

R..

Hey now... Dr. Deco isn't a dude... and this is, after all, his forum. Let's have a little respect!

LOL.

But what's wrong with Dude???

And who said I was a DIRf graduate anyway

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned it yet but it sounds like you need PADI's wheel. As long as you dive the deepest step first working towards shallow through the dive it will enable you to do the required calculations for a multi level dive.

At $75.00-$100.00(CDN) I don't mention the wheel.

What a waste of plastic, well, the wheel is OK, but the price is a waste of someone's money. Especially since you don't need it

WOW!!! I can't really remember but I'm sure mine wasn't as expensive as that. I wouldn't have bought it at that kind of price! It'll do the job that the original poster asked for though.

Sorry though folks, you're going to have to figure out that part by yourself :) I'm not giving the whole "secret" away!!

As for all the table "combinations and permutations", it's way easier than that too. Didn't we have this discussion a few weeks ago in another thread?

I'd say trust me, but I don't want you to. But I trust me :), and I do it all the time, on every "Rec NDL dive", without exception.

It was pretty clear that you at least attempted a DIRF, even before I looked at your public profile.
