I'm going to be in NC for a couple of days at the beginnig of may and being that close to the coast, I would like to get in a day of diving. Now, I'm not a technical diver by any stretch of the imagination, so no penetrating wrecks or cave dives, I'm just looking a couple of mellow recreational dives.

Any suggestions for a dive shop or dive op?

Thanks,
- Oliver

Oliver,
really depends on where you are going. Are you going to be in the Hatteras/Nags Head area, the Beaufort/Morehead area (my fav), or the Wilmington area?
Fill us in with that and we can help you out a little more detail on wrecks and such.
Until then, this will get you going.
(all of these are very reputable outfits; can't go wrong with either)

In the Hatteras/Nags Head area OBX divers has a great reputation.

In the Beaufort/Morehead area there is Discovery Diving Co., Olympus Dive Center, and Diver Down with Capy Bobby.

In the Wilmington area there is Aquatic Safaris

Hope you enjoy your stay!

Or if you are in the Raleigh area and just want to see what a quarry looks like, I bet we could scare up a couple of buddies for you. :)

Otherwise I agree with Jason

I'll be in Charlotte for a day, but I thought of flying into Raleigh, because it's quite a bit cheaper, and then driving to the coast to do some sight seeing and diving, so I'm pretty flexible as to the location. I'll check out the recommendations.
I appreciate the invite to a quarry, but we do a lot of lake (reserviores) diving aroung here and I would really like to see a bit more wildlife than that. (I assume that quarries are similar to lakes)

Thanks for the info,
- Oliver

If you're driving to the coast from Raleigh I think you'd probably be heading to Beaufort/Morehead area. What kind of depths are wanting to dive? What is your experience level? Lots of wrecks to see here!

Jason

Wilmington is actually closer and quicker to get to down I40- about 2 hrs away, Morehead is closer to 3 hrs down 70. The cotton exchange and the USS North Carolina (WWII battle ship) make some interesting sight seeing. Either place is nice.

I was kidding about the quarry, it's not much but beats being dry.

hmmm, your right Herman. Just looking at Mapquest it appears Wilmington is 130 miles from Raleigh and Morehead is 146. Main advantage appears to be the straight shot I-40 provides. Oh well, both great destinations!
