Even though I dive a dry suit (i.e. I'm not necessarily in trouble if my wing won't inflate), I always check that my wing responds to air input and my suit responds to both air input and dumping. And I'm not even generally thinking about safety, I'm just to darn lazy to want to climb up the ladder an extra time if something is so wrong I can't fix it in the water. So mom was wrong: laziness can be a virtue.
I also always breathe several breaths from both regs and watch my pressure gauge when I do it.
