I will be in Japan mid to late July Tokyo for some city time but we also want to go to another area for nature and maybe diving.

Is there a place we can fly to with good diving within close reach of the airport? no long dives or ferries preferred.

Is Mid July ok to Dive Japan?

Any recommended resorts or dive shops close to the okinawa diving? (We will leave half the family at the resort while we dive so shorter trips are better.

Ishigaki would work and Club Med Kabira, it would be best to have a hire car as well though

July is peak season for Manta's in Ishigaki but Tokyo and all of Japan will be very hot and extremely humid, so a trip to Sapporo and Hokkaido might be more comfortable.

If this is your first trip to Japan make sure you cross as many of these off your list as possible Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Nikko, Hiroshima, Fuji San, yakushima (you can dive here)

Remember the shinkansen can be faster than flying

on mainland Japan, most diving is done near Chiba (Tokyo) and Izu Peninsula (Shimoda area). Okinawa definitely has the most convenient and accessible diving. in Okinawa, the Sunabe Seawall is roughly a half mile long with 20-25 sets of stairs leading to the ocean that is a different dive site with different conditions. all of them are walk in, shore dives. there are a lot of hotels around the Sunabe area. a few shops will rent tanks and some will rent gear.
