Any reason why not?
When the camera hits the water it can disturb the o-ring enough to let water in. Just make sure the camera is protected and in your "slipstream" when you enter with a giant stride or a back roll.
 
Get the camera neutral with weights or incompressible foam. Then a bolt snap tied to the wrist strap is all you need.
