I recently upgraded to the g7 before the release of the g9. Decided I'll stay with the g7 since it'll work just fine for my needs. But I had a couple questions on it.

With the wp-dc11 canon housing, Is there any way to control the f-stop and aperture while underwater without having access to the rotating dial?

I was thinking of trying to use the manual white balance, but from reading other posts it seems that other people aren't using this function. Should I use a manual white balance for shallow underwater photography?

Also was wondering if anyone could explain how setting the white balance for wide angle vs macro varies with the different distances?

I read that the canon g7 can attach an epoque 67mm lens adapter? ScubaCam.nl - Dé onderwaterfoto en -video specialist
Has anyone tried this with the g7 for wide angle or macro? If so, care to share some example shots.

I guess that was alot questions. Any help will be awesome.

Thanks,

-Josh

Yes you can control the fstop and shutter speed - not as easy because you need to press two buttons at once. Directions are in the case instructions.

I don't use the white balance much because i almost always use an underwater strobe. You will be disappointed in the camera's flash - the diffuse doesn't work well and the lense surround leaves a shadow on any closeup macro shots.

Get a small underwater writing tablet for setting the white balance.

i have a g7 and i find that contorlling fstop and shutte speed is quite easy, toggle between the two as normal, then hold down the print button at the top left of the camera (on the back) and push either left of right on the controls to adjust.

the white tablet is what i use to adjust whit balance, this works perfectly.

i do have a question for anyone with more experience with this camera than myself, i am going to upgrade to a ikelite housing so i can use a ttl strobe (this by the way also allows the use of a macro lens) but if im reading the manual correctly it says that ttl does not work in manual mode, i will still have to adjust strobe output, is this correct?

somebody please tell me im reading it wrong!

Thanks for the help. Using the two keys for adjusting isn't to bad..just gotta get used to it.

Has anyone tried the epoque for wide angle or macro?

This may be a silly question, but are there any particulars for white slate or will any white plastic work?

r&wc,

I just got myself a DS51 strobe. I'm using the sync cord to connect it to my ikelite G7 housing. Under manual mode, with TTL selected, the flash output can be controlled from the camera.

Extracted this from the Ikelite's website:

"There is no TTL flash even with Canon's own flash in the camera "M" mode. Manual power settings can be selected with the multi-control button on the back of the camera. The strobe should still be left in TTL to take advantage of this feature"

I'm not sure what Ikelite meant in the sentence red sentence but it went further by saying that "Manual power settings can be selected with the multi-control button on the back of the camera. The strobe should still be left in TTL to take advantage of this feature"

To be frank, I'm also confused with what Ikelite meant. Hope someone out there could enlighten us

I think they are saying TTL doesn't work at all when you are in M mode regardless of the strobe you are using. If you are shooting in M mode then you would have to control the flash power setting by hitting the Func.Set button in the middle of the dial, scrolling down to +/-Flash and adjust.

I'm using a different housing & strobe, but as a G7 owner, that's my read on it.

i have since found out that the ttl function does not function in M mode, but using the camera to control the flash power does work very well, better in fact than turning the knob on the strobe. i did have to send my housing back to ikelite though, the foam part the the lens passes through to enter the port is off center and causes my lens to bind when i try to zoom, i never got to put the housing in the water and im now hoping that since the housing is still new and unused i will be able to get the dealer to credit me and get me a g9 housing instead so i can upgrade, well see how well that goes
