Once a year me and the wife go through all of our gear and anything that hasn't been used in the last 6 - 12 months we get rid of based on the idea of if we haven't used it we likely won't use it any time in the near future. A lot of this stuff is either brand new cause we thought we just had to have it, or is only slightly used.
