I have seen plastic cartridges crack. It depends on how the canister is drained and mostly there is little choice. Draining from the bottom causes the pressure between the cartridge shell and the canister wall to drop faster than the pressure inside the cartridge. Over time, the flexing can cause cracks. Over at the DIY room, I explained how I built some cartridges from 6061 aluminum tube. It's cheap and kinda fun, too. There is a possibility that the cartridge could corrode but who cares? It would take years to corrode through. Build a new one in an hour or two.
