Two Puget Sound divers die in separate accidents

Two people died in separate diving accidents Saturday in Puget Sound.

Guy A. Snell, 49, of Poulsbo, died during a spearfishing trip with three companions, including an adult son, off Blake Island, authorities said.

Snell's companions called 911 around 10:30 a.m., saying he had failed to surface, said Deputy Scott Wilson, a spokesman for the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office.

A helicopter and three vessels spent several hours searching the surface but found no sign of Snell, who was identified as a retired Navy diver who was working for the Navy as a civilian diver.

After a delay due to dangerous currents, authorities launched a search that included several vessels and about 40 Navy divers. Authorities said Snell's body was found at about 3 p.m. in about 50 feet of water southwest of Blake Island, a state park north of Vashon Island.

The cause of Snell's death was not immediately known. An initial examination revealed no obvious equipment malfunctions and he was not entangled by underwater debris, Wilson said.

The Kitsap County Coroner's Office identified Snell Saturday and said it was conducting an investigation to determine the cause of his death.

A 55-year-old Edmonds man died in a separate incident off Edmonds Dive Park, according to Edmonds police.

Police were called at about 12:30 p.m. with a report of a diver who had been found unconscious 30 feet underwater. CPR was performed on the man for about 45 minutes, but he could not be revived. His name was not released.

Seattle Times reporter Sandi Doughton contributed to this story.

This is the time of year when we seem to get a lot of diving accidents ... perhaps due to occasional divers who are getting back into the water after a winter layoff.

Edmonds is generally considered a pretty benign dive site, although on large tidal exchanges it can be a challenge to some due to unpredictable current and long surface swims.

I remember reading something similar about diver deaths spiking during the Florida "mini-season" for lobster. Lot of middle aged guys getting back into the water after a long layoff.

Edmonds diver dies at dive park near ferry terminal
Published: Saturday, May 21, 2011

EDMONDS -- A 55-year-old Edmonds man died Saturday at the Edmonds Dive Park near the Edmonds ferry terminal.

Fire District 1 medical personnel and Edmonds Police officers responded about 12:30 p.m. to a diver-in-distress call, said police Sgt. Donald Anderson.

KIRO-TV reported that the diver was pulled out of the water by his son, who was his diving partner. He was found unconscious in about 30 feet of water.

The son started CPR until fire crews arrived, Snohomish Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.

Fire District 1 personnel continued resuscitation for another 45 minutes but were unable to revive him, Anderson said.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiners Office plans to release the name of the man after the accident investigation is complete and family members have been notified.

The Blotter | MyEdmondsNews: Diver dies 2 weeks before retirement | Seattle Times Newspaper
The 56-year-old man who died Saturday after diving at the Edmonds Underwater Park was doing practice dives in preparation for harvesting geoducks in Hood Canal, his son told Times news partner MyEdmondsNews.com.

After Frank Dold Sr. lost consciousness during a dive, his son, Frank Dold Jr., 36, attempted to perform CPR on his father as he was bringing him to shore, Edmonds police said. CPR efforts were continued by paramedics at Brackett's Landing beach, but the older Dold could not be revived.

Dold Jr. said that his father had just turned in his retirement papers at Gai's Bakery in Seattle, and was looking forward to enjoying "all the things he had always wanted to do," including scuba diving. The elder Dold was two weeks from retirement when he died.

He had waited an extra year to retire to ensure that two of his children had health insurance, his son told MyEdmondsNews.
