Hello everyone,

This is my first questin in this forum.

Any good suggestion where I could dive with Dolphins in open water?

Thanks in advance,

Denis

Well I won't lie...I haven't traveled anywhere crazy to dive yet but I have been diving with 3 dolphins on Monastery Beach in Carmel, CA. Pretty cool experience.

Glover's Atol in Belize is literally crawling with dolphins. I saw seventeen on one dive. Saw them from the several times, and saw one in the water with a whale shark and a bull shark. One the dive when we saw seventeen, the DM was completely unimpressed. He said it happens all the time.

We were approached by a dolphin in Egypt. It swam with us for about 1/2 hour. My buddy took a picture of it. If you click on the link under my name you'll see it. Very cool experience.

Anthony's Key Resort, in Roatan, organizes a dolphin dive regularly. We did it when we were there in 2006, and for a "been there, done that" experience, it's worth the $125. These are dolphins that are kept in some sort of a "research" facility near the resort. They let a couple of the males out into open water, and they follow the boat out to an open, sandy area about 50 feet deep. The divers drop down and arrange themselves on the bottom, and the dolphins will approach you as they please ... turns out that divers please them plenty, as we got a lot of interaction with them during our 50-minute dive.

This is a pic of me and one of the dolphins ...

BTW - you don't have to stay at Anthony's to do this dive ... we were at CocoView for the week, and they took us over by bus.

I think I remember seeing an ad for dolphin swimming at Key Largo. Check that out.

Dolphins in the wild generally don't like divers unless they are using rebreathers. Snorkeling is the way to interact with greatest certainty.

That said, we see them often off of First Bight on the South side of Roatan, about 10 minutes East of FIBR and CCV.

I don't trust dolphins man.
they freak me out a little bit.

For the most part I suspect the feeling is mutual ...

Two other "open water" experiences are at Unexso on Grand Bahama and the Sea Aquarium on Curacao. Both bring the dolphins to you on a planned dive. I recently did the Curacao dive, it was pretty expensive ($200) for what you got - a 1/2hr. dive in 40' of water.

The Hilton Waikoloa on the Big Island of Hawaii has dolphins on property, not sure if they do a dive.

The only wild place we've reliably seen them is in the channel off Bari Reef between Bonaire and Klein Bonaire. But if you're lucky enough to spot them returning from a dive, it's snorkeling only.
