If you know exactly what you want in terms of gear, the cheapest game in town is Scuba.com (Divers Discount). They will match the dirt cheap on-line pricing of Leisure Pro, and they are an authorized dealer for all the products they carry.

Kevin,

Thanks for the info - I just bought a bunch of gear, wish I had thought to ask here before I did!

Kitty tell me where you are staying in LA. I can hook you up with a hotel and if you need gear do your shopping and call us when you hit town. We are not shy about helping you out. And to the others who bothered to say something nice about all the local dive shops in LA we thank you and we hope you will come back....I was lucky to have nice customers like you. Hope I am not too late in replying Kitty. Hal hollywoodivers.com

Thanks SteveD, I checked their website, looking good, will be booking my dive through them. Really envy you, doing 5 dives of Catalina!

SteveD:
I've just come back from the States and did 5 dives of Catalina in the kelp. Great fun, well worth it.
As far a buying gear, try Hollywood Divers http://www.hollywoodivers.com/
Great guys, ask for Hal, lots of gear and OK prices.

I booked my diving through Sports Chalet, see
http://www.sportchalet.com/corp/index.jsp?page=divers_charters
I booked both Island Time and Pacific Star, both very good.

Also check out http://www.ladiver.com/ for info on South CA diving operators.

I did buy a Vytec while I was there, but am having serious problems with it locking up in dive mode. Check it out before you commit the big bucks. I've had no problems with my Mosquito so the Vytec is quite disappointing.

Hi Hal,

Thanks for your reply, you're not too late. Checked your website today, looks good. I only booked one night at Venice Beach Hostel on the 24th October. Thinking of popping in your store on the 25th and perhaps diving on 26th October.

Will send you email closer to the date once I've sorted out what I'm going to do in LA.

Cheers,

Dr Bill,

Thanks so much for your time, I can understand that you're so passionate about your home dive sites! I checked your website, very interesting, all the different fishes. I love the scorpion fish photo, what a character.
Well, I'll try to book Hollywood Divers for a few dives at Catalina and see if I can get to Casino point. I love diving at protected marine park. Hopefully, I'll bump into you underwater

SteveD's suggestion of diving Catalina (my home) is a good one. Kelp beds here are good, visibility better than the mainland. You can take a boat out of the LA area and dive several locations on Catalina. If you are an experienced diver, I wouldn't recommend booking through Sports Chalet myself (although you could get a good experience with them too). You might talk to Hollywood Divers to see if they have any trips out here then.

Another suggestion is to take the Catalina Express ferry from Long Beach or San Pedro to Avalon on Catalina and dive at the Casino Point dive park here. It has a good variety of habitats and has been a protected area for 40+ years so the marine life is pretty good for a mostly over-fished soCal.

Another good site to check out is California Diving News for information on California diving and dive boats. You can also look at my web site (see link in sig) for images of what you can see out here.

Glad to see you have got your diving sorted out. Enjoy the trip. Noticed on your profile that you enjoy wreck dives. If you are on the south side of Sydney, check out http://www.seatamerdive.com/. They do a number of the wrecks including the Tuggerah, the 7am dive to 50m on Saturdays and Sundays is a wreck dive.

I also dive with Abyss who regularly do deep dives as part of their PADI and TDI training. I know a Coolooli night dive is coming up for example. See http://www.abyss.com.au/. Nice folks: Rachel, Carl and Peter.

Hal, make sure you take good care of another Aussie diver!

I would suggest taking a look at Channel Island Scuba in Thousand Oaks Ca. I drive from Las Vegas to Thousand Oaks to buy my equipment. They are great!!!! Give them a shout. :)

You can try Reef Seekrs Also. www.reefseekers.com

They are great. They are very resposible accross the board. Safe on and in the water. And they have an amazing purchase policy. I have bought all my gear there and had nothing but great experiances.

Just my 2 cents

Hi Steve,
How cool is this! My friend has a boat and a group of us dive the Tuggerah often and get the Nitrox deco tank filled at the Abyss.
The night dive on the Coolooli sounds awesome. Are you doing that dive? I'll check it out to see if I'm still around Sydney to do it.
