OK, i've been convinced to take the ds course, I'm gonna Pay And Dive In.

If you don't want to do the course, at least buy the book. It covers alot of what you're asking. You should be able to pick that up at a dive shop, or on ebay.

I'd offer you some answers, but I just got my drysuit and have only done the course in it. I'm still learning/re reading the book and don't want to give you any wrong answers :) I know tuck and roll for getting air out of your feet, as that happened to me during my course. Not fun at all, but easy to get the air out.

That sounds like a good plan.

If you have been around drysuit divers you can learn a lot of it in through osmosis. Then if you have a mentor you can get your act together. If you don't have those two advantages then taking the course is the best way to get up to speed before you get hurt or damage something.
