Aquaseal is great stuff, but it's primarily a sealant not an adhesive. It's good at filling gaps and remaining flexible when applied thickly, but not great on peel strength, which is what you really need for a pocket. Sure it may work, and some people have used it without problems, but their are other, stonger products.

I don't think any of the pocket manufacturers recommend using it. Mostly they say to use black neoprene glue though Fifth Dimension recommends some crafty-type glue - E6000?

dtdiver once bubbled...

oxyhacker, why the negative comment on the aquaseal? i'm curious!

The Halcyon site recommends McNett Seal Cement. I have some of this in black, and the container says Aquaseal all over it. However, like the previous post, it isn't the stuff in the tube. I would check with the manufacturer of the suit to be sure.

I just glued 2 pockets onto my bare nex-gen drysuit. I did them one pocket at a time, and sanded the drysuit & cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol before glueing each one. I used aquaseal on the first pocket (not thinned with cotol), and took it for several dives to see how it held up before glueing the other pocket on. I wasn't satisfied, as the top edge started peeling a little bit after about a half dozen dives. Then I read about this whiz-bang glue called E6000 here on scubaboard, so I figured I'd give it a try with the other pocket. It held up admirably for exactly one dive. After the second dive, the pocket was more than half way peeled off, so I just peeled it the rest of the way off & stuck it in my gear bag before it fell off & got lost, along with it's contents. The aquasealed pocket is still there, with minor peeling at the top.

What would you recommend? I’m getting ready to attach the 5thD Pockets to my Bare NexGen.

How well is the E6000 glue holding up for those that have used it?

I've used E6000, and know that there are those that have used it successfully, but my technique wasn't real effective, so after a season of dive abuse the corners were pealing. Rather than re-do them, I had DrysuitRepair.com do them when I sent my suit in for seal replacement. I'm not sure what they used, but the pockets still look like the day I got them back.

I think the part I failed on was the patient application of layer after layer after layer of glue dried to tackiness prior to pocket application.

YMMV

Can you add pockets to a wet suit? Sounds like it might be useful.
