Suggestions needed please!! I don’t have an ear infection it’s been checked and re checked. But when I dive ears occasionally okay sometimes struggle with equalising. Some dives work just fine some I can’t go beyond 7m as my ears hurt. When I am out of the water after a dive they are sore. Then it wears off and I dive again. It’s really inconsistent I never know how it’s going to be until I dive. Currently trying to get through my dive master and diving twice a day in tropical water. Thanks!

I assume you are equalizing with Valsalva; some think that is the worst way to equalize. Try another way, and start doing it before your ehad is undeaer, then often. If you feel the pressure in your ears, it's too late; ascend a bit and try again.

For external ear pain, a mixture of antibiotics and lidocaine is wonderful; this mixture is not available in the US.

If you can’t equalize then you shouldn’t keep descending because you can cause serious injury by pushing it, which it sounds like you’re doing.

Consider taking a decongestant before the dive and even the day before.

How have you been equalizing up until your DM program?

That’s a great article thanks for the link. I will try the lidocaine!

The lidocaine/antibiotic mixture is meant more for external ear infections. That's probably not what is causing your equalization issues. Recommend you follow the excellent advice offered here and begin equalizing before you begin your descent, descend slowly equalize early and often, and stop descending if you are unable to equalize. If the issue persists, a visit to an ear/nose/throat specialist would be a good idea.

Best regards,
DDM
