You can buy a fin clip at your LDS and not have to make anything "they are cheap", I use them on most of my shore dives which is most of the diving I do. I dive mostly cold water so with thick gloves and wetsuit my hand does not fit through the spring strap on the fin so putting them over your arm doesn't work for me. When diving off a boat follow what the crew wants you to do with your finns. Spring straps are the way to go!!

I can get a big double ender around my springs. I figure extra double-enders might come in handy anyway.

I thought all bcd's came with a fin strap across the chest

And they can be added to Bill Main harnesses as well.
