Stone him, leave him on the spear, take it to the boat and use a shears (and heavy rubber gloves) to cut off all the pectoral, anal and dorsal spines...and fillet him.

Yeah, but is really hard to throw a stone hard enough to kill a lionfish underwater.

I have actually learned how to process video sequences into something, sort of. Took long enough, sigh. Anyway, I have processed some of the lionfish sequences into a clip and have uploaded it with clearer compression on Vimeo resulting in a better video I think. Check it out above in the original posting on page one under Pacific Predator Invades.

* Have there been other sightings in the Southeastern Bahamas? How about down in the Antilles?

Here on Catalina we're dealing with an invasive Asian kelp (Sargassum filicinum) that has radically changed the ecology of most of our leeward side dive sites including the Casino Point Dive Park in just two years. Last weekend I was diving and filmed another Asian invasive kelp, Undaria pinnatifida. I often wonder how many of our temperate SoCal species are invading temperate Asian sites.

This is very interesting. Would the Indo Pacific species be more adaptive in a new environment? Would Yellow Tail Snappers from the Caribbean thrive and multiply on Apo Reef in the Philippines? Or would they just be a "babe in the woods" and get mauled?

I reworked the video quite a bit including content from lionfish in both Bimini and Andros in the Bahamas under "Pacific Predator Invades Atlantic" at:

Good luck with Catalina. I was there only once in 2003 for a couple of dives at the Park. Shot some video, viz. was about 40 ft. at one point so I was lucky. I will put it into a clip and upload it. There was an obvious difference between the condition on the kelp off Catalina at the time vs. what I saw off La Jolla though. Lots of changes underway out there, too many sad to say and in our lifetime.

Just came across a government listing of lionfish sightings in the Atlantic. Good luck to us, eight in Little Cayman?!. How about the one seen off Las Olas in Ft. Lauderdale. How many have been seen at this point off SE Florida?
