If you have to go at depth do it for God's sake! The digestion process does not stop at depth. Trying to hold it in could result in some serious pain as you ascend. The bubble will grow. Better to grow outside the gut than inside. But if you do it in a drysuit make sure you get your buddy or instructor to check your exhaust valve on the surface. :D. I wonder how long this thread will last before somebody gets all PC and yanks it. There have been a number of fart threads that just disappeared like one in the wind.
 
Think of the physical reason for why we off-gas internally. There is a solid mass of waste matter sliding along an intestine on it's way to the exit. As it slides along it compresses the methane[between it and the exit] that is being produced by decomposition of the waste matter. When that gas gets so compressed at the exit point that it overcomes the resistence of the "exit portal" that portal relaxes and allows the gas to escape and you better be near a john because you know what is coming out next.

Now the reason I say that it is physically impossible is because it is my understanding that flesh and liquids inside our body are not affected by increases in pressure but the gaseous voids in out body are --lungs, sinuses, tooth cavities, BOWELS, inner ear, etc. If a freediver goes down to 200' the ambient air he took in on the surface is compressed in the lungs to almost nothing in volume. If YOU have ambient air in your bowels when you go to depth, that air will also be greatly decreased in volume which means it will not be putting pressure on the "exit portal" to cause such portal to loosen up thus off-gassing. The downside is that the waste matter will no longer have that gas between it and the exit so you better be wearing DEPENDS!

If you want to get into the physics of it, think about this one. If gas is more dense at depth due to the pressure, does that mean the smell is also more dense and when it gets to the surface is actually magnitudes worse than if let loose at the surface???

Inside or out, the gas will expand on ascent (the body not being a 'rigid' container). On that basis, if you feel the need to vent at depth, it's probably a wise idea - because the consequences of having that gas dramatically expand on ascent are quite explosive.

That said, with the effects of pressure/compression - you'd need to be producing a lot of exhaust gas to even feel the urge to vent at depth.

Ok, time for some "useless facts".
We have nerves all over our body, including in the ass. These nerves in your anus actually sense the difference between solid matter and gas, so as long as youve learned to distinguish the different feeling between gas and solids, you wont need to wear depends, youll know what is coming. Unless of course you have diarreah as very liquid fecies can fool us to believe its gas, when it is infact not. That move is called the hammerhead and you DO NOT want to google it (or search for it on this forum)..

And are you that over the course of 100+ dives that you have never farted while diving? :eek:
