As a practical matter, there are a series of reef lines running parallel to the coast almost the entire length of Broward Conty. While the distance varies (the coast curves inward), You can swim to the first reef or its remnants from just about any beach.

Specific dive sites are where the interesting stuff is noted. Going north from the causeway you have the Vista Del Mar Erojacks, and then not much more until you hit Oakland Park (5 miles north of you). Continuing north from there for about 5 miles gets busier:

Vista Park Reef
Lauderdale by the Sea at Datura Ave
Hall of Fame reef
Copenhagen Wreck
Pompano Dropoff

Going south you have the Dania Erojacks and SeaTech Ledges within about 3 miles, and in an addition three miles you hit the Perry Street Rocks and Yellow Brick Road.

That's 9 pretty cool beach dives you can get to by taxi from your hotel. And when you'd done them all, do them again as night dives...

If you want to rent a car for a day...an hour north will be Blue Heron Bridge and about an hour and a half south you'll be onKey Largo, where they don't beach dive much but the dive ops go to some really cool wrecks and reefs.
