Socorro is truly one of the great dive locals in the world and as such you would truly be lucky to go at with what sounds like a half price trip with the two of you splitting the costs?
You really need to talk to the leaders of this trip and tell them flat out your level of training and ask them if they are using Dive Masters/Guides who can help you out, if this is a true research expedition and the two of you have to be buddies and take care of yourselves totally on your own then you should at least be advanced certified with experience in Deep Blue water diving with good buoyancy. You will also have very close encounters with large pelagics which will be awesome but at first may intimidate you.
We are taking a group of divers to Socorro in early Dec. 2010 ourselves and suggest that our divers be advanced certified but because we will have great Dive Masters and ourselves as instructors on the dives we are comfortable with assisting our group if needed.
You should also ask yourselves if this sounds fun to you to do for the time and money, challenges are great but they should always be in the context of having fun, if not you should do something that is.
Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have about Socorro, dive Training or other trips you may want to to.
