Hiya. I live in the suburbs of Detroit and I just completed my PADI OW cert dives this past Sunday. I took the class with my boyfriend and a couple of our friends. I have a lifelong fear of the water so gaining my certification was a means to help me put that behind me. Now I need to do some real dives and build my skills.

Welcome to the board!

Congrats on passing you OW class! Welcome to the board!

What shop did you do your classes thru?

Hi and welcome. Learning a new physical skill is a a major achievement especially if you have had to overcome some history, so well done and you wouldn't belive how much your skills will develop with practice - go for it.

We went through Sea-Side Dive Shop in St. Clair Shores. Are you familiar with them at all? They were very kind to me, even when I was being a big baby and crying about the stuff that scared me! :bawling:

Are there any places within a reasonable distance of Detroit that make a good daytrip or weekend trip for new divers?

Welcome to the board! I live just up the road from Sea-Side, and I am familiar with the shop. There's 3 quarries in NW Ohio, boat charters in Lake Huron, plus lots of inland lakes in SE Michigan that make for decent day trips. Check out the Great Lakes Wrecking Crew forum. We're always diving somewhere around here.
